Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Verizon broke me

At this point, I would be willing to take a major pay cut to get a better work/life balance, more autonomy, fewer layoffs, and most importantly, to start working somewhere with a normal work environment instead of the toxic mess that is Verizon. I just need to get away from here.

I got away six months ago.

Don't drink the VZW Kool-Aid because believe it or not there is actually life beyond it. I have a job now with a much smaller company now making as much money, with pretty much the same benefits, a fraction of the work, and ZERO stress so far.

Yes have heard a few rumors. Some network folks were being asked if they would take a package. Heard a few last week and 1 this week. Something is being plotted.

These posts are both interesting and frightening to me. I'm someone looking from the outside in. I've been a long-time personal customer dealing with Verizon in recent months as a corporate customer making certain asks that are apparently are off script. Peaking in from the outside, I'm shocked what I see. It's like no one really knows what any other department does but are happy to send you onto the next department, temporarily raising your hopes that that department will finally be the one that can fix your problems. Of course, as soon as you talk to the new department, you realize that they too don't know who does what and aren't really authorized to do anything. And this despite the fact that I managed to escape the loop of talking to whatever 3rd party customer service company Verizon uses and was talking to Americans on the inside. I'm just not sure how a company this dysfunctional can continue to survive. Shocked, speachless, and considering moving my personal line over to another carrier....

There is a greener pasture out there. I was part of GNT, given the package a year ago, took some time off to recharge, and found a better place. I no longer need to work weekends and late hours, less nepotism, ideas/respect are given, better work/life balance, less stress, actual given time for learning/development, and not having to manage 8+ projects at once.

I sit inside 4 walls at verizon by myself with no windows or signs of life, I’m not able to leave my post or my passive aggressive manager will call and say hey why aren’t you sitting at your desk. I basically sit there all day and wait for the phone to ring … yes it’s a sad existence but they pay me well.

VZ has made some serious blunders over the last 8 or so years. Back in the day when wireless subscriber numbers started to dip, there was always a pivot by leadership on direction. Recovery was quick enough to recover in quarter or next quarter at the least. Nope, not now. It’s a first class systemic and dysfunctional Sh1tshow. Very Bad investment decisions, strategic short sightedness, and sinking culture due to RIFs and poor decision making. The magic is lost. The board needs to stop listening to the wrong people, and the wrong people in leadership roles need to be removed. Get your head out of your A$$ Verizon, and fix this downward spiraling sh1t show! To the board, you are paid to make tough decisions to make the company successful. The same with Exec leadership. Now you have people walking in the lines, afraid of their own shadow, because they don’t want to be next. So glad I was in a position to divorce myself from this hot mess when the perfect opportunity arose.

"Rumblings"? You mean other posts here? There's no way another VSP is offered, it'll be RIF's until the job market changes.

Anyone here of a package being offered like they did in 2018? I’m hearing rumblings. I’ve reached out to people ‘in the know’. Will see what comes back later today.

Friday March 3rd is the happiest day of the year. Do you know why? Because that is the day that I get to say F’ this place and resign. Take my stock together payout and walk out the door.

Toxic does not begin to describe Verizon. Dysfunctional, broken, rudderless, leaderless, and at times corrupt thanks to Hans.

March 3rd cannot get here soon enough.

I wouldn't view it as Verizon broke you. It sounds like you've determined other things are more important. It could be you have just outgrown the Verizon nonsense. Good luck and I hope you find a great next stop.

This post resonated quite a bit with me. I've been feeling the pending RIF's for the last couple of months and even though they haven't hit our broader team yet, I know they are coming. I have never felt less desire to anything more than minimum, not because I don't want to succeed or do well, but because it's most of the time for nothing. Slides that don't get reviewed... processes that break... dev items rushed to prod that are unreliable or broken... and I look forward, taking into account how the culture is, and I do not see any sort of light at the end of the tunnel. It will only get worse. We are a culture of "try and it's OK to fail" that has spent too much time failing... and the 'good' people are leaving or have left already and the leftovers are scrambling to make sense of things. Verizon was good once and I will miss the benefits but I too feel like it's time to go... Verizon is a sinking ship with leaders that don't look down and see the water in the galley...

Can relate with this post. Worse when you know for a fact that your duties in any other company would be half if not a third of what they are at Verizon.

I have not seen a more rudderless ship in a long time. I get time with people in different business units and a disturbingly high number of people I interact with seem to have no idea how their work relates to any strategy that exists beyond their immediate team. That disconnect is a big, big problem. It's not due to laziness or whatever, these are smart people who work hard, they're just lost at sea, rowing in circles. Endless re-orgs, RIF's and direction changes without a clear direction forward have huge swaths of this company directionless, waiting for their next re-org or layoff.

Put my hand up end of 2021 and only felt sorry for some of those left behind. We were working 60 plus hour weeks for months, added millions of dollars in revenue and margin directly, weekends and our boss said the job was not a 40-hour week. Took us away from commission under the pretense that it was hard to track, costing each of us mucho dollars.

If you have any tenure based benefits such as long term care insurance or 5+ weeks vacation each year, be aware of how long it will take (if ever) to get those benefits back at another employer. Also add any benefits waiting period, FMLA waiting period, and probationary periods that come with new employment.

Government agencies like Verizon can be difficult to work for because you’re told it’s a business but in reality it’s a welfare program.

100% - this place has become the most dysfunctional work environment I have ever been. And leaders don’t care. They want it to be that way so you can leave.

Update your resume and start applying for external roles religiously. A better opportunity will come.
