Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Why do we support so much time off for our H1B colleagues and not those in NA?

Unpopular opinion, but a lot of our H1B colleagues do seem to get to run back home and either work weeks at a time or take weeks off. Yet when I take a sick day I get screamed at by the same folks. Great cross-functional corporate culture.

There are abusers of the system that are NA as well as H1B. The problem is the leadership that allows it. Working on a team that is part Ford of India, part NA which has a third H1B , there are scammers and abusers in all categories.

There are 6 US born team members of which 2 actually do work.

  • 2 are flat out incompetent the boss knows and just lets them sit and do nothing (for 15 years and counting)
  • 2 are flat out lazy the excuses they have for not doing/coming to work are hilarious.

— One guy called off from work for a week because he couldn’t get his garage door open, the week long drama of emails on this were priceless. Then squirrels invaded his house and ate thru wires, another week off with pay.
— The other guy is in his 70s and told everyone at his 60th bday party he wasn’t going to do anymore work. He hasn’t.

Of the 3 H1B,

  • one does work and is good. Yes he takes December off to go back to India- so what, he earned the comptime and vacation time.
  • The other two are working on an MBA at Lawrence Tech during work hours. They do no Ford work. They do manage to claim credit for Ford of India team members work. And YES the LL6 is fully aware of this. He and his wife both did the same when they were H1B and are now both LL6 and US citizens.

The Ford of India team changes quarterly, as soon as they get a bit of experience they resign. It doesn’t help that the two unscrupulous stateside H1Bs are taking credit and assigning blame.

Scammers gonna scam. They model the behavior of those above them. It is the Ford path to promotion.

F tries to drape itself in the flag and play up it's roots in the American culture (numerous F series ads over the years) yet it continues to rely on H1B workers for mid level roles. The JF complains about too many engineers and a dearth of talent in the pipeline. Anyone else see the mixed messages?

We had a "H1B handler" in our group. He openly said that he recommended new arrivals to purchase any car but a Ford. This lunch table conversation happened about six years ago and we were all flummoxed by his statement. Why bite the hand that feeds you? Of course there was the case 20 years ago where management hire parked her Lexus in the management parking spaces. We all thought it was odd, after a year a LL5 was still driving a Lexus. They did not last long, too much baggage with that hire. Other manufactures are not as tolerant as Ford when it comes to product disloyalty. If you are tone deaf they send the signal at the start by having you park in "Siberia".

Remember folks, corporate greed is the prime driver of these decisions. I was SIRP'ed as a TA. Was told my job function is no longer needed. I just saw a LinkedIn post having the exact same job title and function as mine. Person is from Mexico. Not upset at my replacement. It's clear I was let go because of my salary and pension liability, even though I was a good employee. Consultants and leadership are doing a number on Ford. There is no sense of society or family. Sleep with one eye open is the hard lesson I learnt. But on the positive side, I no longer live in fear of losing a job.

Luckily I got employment within a month.

They don't get anymore benefits than US employees do. They often work with their boss to take 2-3 weeks off at one time to go back home and see their families. They don't have ability to drive or fly to a different state to do what we do in the US. As long as folks get their jobs done I personally don't care. My agency employee had once raise in 4 years and he was a great worker. I couldn't do anything about either. Judge each individual by their merit.

Ford is a sell out to US citizens. Stop employing H1Bs and start hiring US workers.

I was appalled during town hall meetings reading the chat where comments like "Go H1B" and "Go India" were posted. Come people, stop the provincialism, One Ford.

Sad to see down votes on a genuine answer. There are way few H1Bs in Ford and most make real good money. And they get the exact same benefits as a US Citizen. I was on H1B before, now a USC.

Rather complaining about time off did you ever compare the productivity? Why in the first place the company has to hire foreign talent if you are doing your job? You guys mow the lawn or work on pet projects on company time.

I can tell you as an H1B guy we don’t get any more time off than you guys. If anything, it means you dont take any of your time off through the year to save the days for the end of the year, then pay thousands of $ to go see your family for 2-3 weeks. A week extra if you manage to go during the christmas break. If you do see your colleagues gone for longer, they probably made up time before or after. When i was agency, i even went unpaid for a week or so every December. Plus during COVID, many did not visit home for 2-3 years at a stretch. Have some empathy and talk to your H1B friends.

Because they pay H1B folks peanuts. Now, the full-time employees from foreign lands that get to go home every 2 years and work from there, they are the ones double-dipping.
