Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Get rid of the old-school dinosaurs

Holding back manufacturing are all these old people with zero-experience outside of intel. these dinosaurs who should have quit or let go in 2016 continue to drag motivation down by re-imagining 2023 as if it were 1999.

Old, outdated, angry intel employees continue pushing the agenda of training… why not send some of these dinosaurs back to school?

This ancient mentality is crippling business and wildly lacking in any form of innovation, while stumping development.

Why are people aged 50+ trying to lead the cutting edge?

Yeah, those old dinosaurs with decades of experience making real products are the problem, not the underqualified URMs that got hired to meet some arbitrary and unnecessary quota.

Give me a frigging break. These RCG'S come in hired as tool owners and engineers because they can take a test well. Then we have to train them on "THEIR" tools do and then how to fix it. Like I said give me a f*#n break.

Same here ! I was at Intel for about 10 years until 2010, ‘came back’ 2 years ago as I thought, wow the old Intel is on its way back !!! I took CPM (voluntary) last month and never felt sooooo relieved to be out of a place. Wrong business model, same bunch of people 20/30 years lifers going nowhere, broken culture all of the place and a Cult of Personality. The Intel of 2010 when I left was beginning to have its problems, but the Intel I went back to was much much worse. I am a 50+ as well and have been celebrating the last 2 weeks that I got out. Intel is f@@ked !

You are only partially correct, summary of issues are:
Bureaucracy and myopic leadership mixed with toxic culture

You have diagnosed the problem only partially correct. You are right all the systems are incredibly convoluted and held together by human glue. Any of their competitors do so much more with significant less operations headcount. Horse and buggy vs streamlined sports car, and you are right training can never bridge that chasm...

The Hubris of Intel is thinking they are world class when they haven't modernized and lost the automation lead 15 years ago. The technical lead they lost more recently (5-7 years ago). Improving systems is nearly impossible due to cost and its against Intel "POR is good enough, the problem must be you". Even if you do succeed in getting approval through the multiple BU to get a change made, once it comes to resourcing it, they will scope the project and decide it is too expensive and ZBB it... If Intel can't get IFS bench-marked and competing at the level of their competitors, they simply cannot compete profitably. An external force could do this, low confidence they can learn new tricks internally and I would think at that point we might see a divorce/split internally.

The only site to effectively improve Intel manufacturing systems got sold to Hynix, and they only modernized as they were running on Micron automation systems. Post divorce from Micron they found out first hand Intel systems POR could not run the fab as is. A 10-20% margin business can not waste money running a fab inefficiently. Too bad Intel doesn't seem to have taken any of those lessons back to the mothership.

It’s not the age you weak minded fool.
It’s the culture.

50+ year olds run most companies.
It’s called late career.
I doubt you’ll make it to 50 in tech with that attitude.
