Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

No more incentive to provide severance

The NRLB removed the incentive for companies to provide severance? So, Employment at Will in the U.S. means no more costly layoff packages are required to be offered now to reduce headcount. The cost of remaining silent can't be bought anymore with a severance agreement. So why would any company continue to offer any severance, when they can just give you a pink slip? The word layoff just lost meaning.

Well, ok, but going forward, let's see if layoffs suddenly stop and are replaced by pink slips without severance, since the ruling just took affect.

"The Arbitration clause that everyone signs when hired essentially protects AT&T from being sued by fired employees"

It doesn't protect them from me suing them, because I opted out as did many others.

It's what @bvk said - severance is cheap insurance for them.

The Arbitration clause that everyone signs when hired essentially protects AT&T from being sued by fired employees, as does the U.S. practice of Employment at Will. So, again, the incentive to provide severance has been removed by the NLRB. Firing people was never this easy, especially those that work from home. Just inactivate their email account/access and off the payroll.

Because there is still an incentive to get an agreement to not be sued by fired employees.
