I’m sorry to hear you were impacted. IBM uses an algorithm that minimizes impact to the business while maximizing impact to cost. Most folks say IBM selects older worker. That’s true, but not because they are old, but because they cost IBM more. It’s all about costs, and if IBM can save a dime via outsourcing without impacting the business, they will do it

Unfortunately, I was among those affected by the RA. I never thought it would happen to me, but it did. I'm curious, does anyone have an idea of how the selection process for layoffs works? How does upper management determine who should be let go if the first-line manager doesn't provide a list of individuals to be laid off?

Different countries have different dates related to their labor laws. There is another post about the issues google and Amazon are having laying off people in Europe. Nothing is visible in workday.

This "The total will be annouced on the first-quarter 2023 financial results on Wednesday, April 19, 2023" is why Arvind recently postponed his monthly chat.

Why can't IBM make a formal layoff announcement like other IT companies? Does such an announcement help to pump the stock price?

To the comment below: "All layoffs should be communicated to the affected employees before the end of next week." Is this because they are going BU to BU or country by country or to shield bad PR or other? Why multiple weeks to execute? Why not an "Up in the Air" style? Any hints in Workday that would alert the employee that they are on the list? Notes about separation or new matrix manager or other?

I’ve been RA this week. All layoffs should be communicated to the affected employees before the end of next week. The total will be annouced on the first-quarter 2023 financial results on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 at 5:00 p.m ET. They did this for the 4Q 2022 results in January when they annouced the 3900 layoffs from the remaining Wateon Health/Kyndryl employees who where notified at the beginning of January.

Across our NA-based org we lost 50%; in my immediate department of 12, 2 remain (2 are outside NA so they were not affected). Shocked, but not shocked. I can retire; there are many who are in mid-career.

Just awful stories of people who are no more than lines on a spreadsheet to whomever is making the decision. And that decision is well above our first and 2nd line managers, who are forced to do the dirty work.
