Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Without legacy wireline, there is no cellular network

For those that keep saying wireline is dead and wireless will be the only jobs, how do you think the wireless network works? The entire backbone from the switch to the cell tower works through the wireline network. Without legacy wireline, there is no cellular network.

Louder for the people in the back. How so many folks don't grasp this is beyond me.

No one said anything about knowing how a CELL PHONE works would save you from layoffs... this further proves a sad point, seems like half the company doesn't have a clue!!! Cell TOWERS, NETWORK KNOWLEDGE, BEING Top Craft these are the positions that have more stability than a group that doesn't know anything about the network.

"Technology God" here as the sarcasm poster called me ... I'm not going to make it too easy on you since you could have simply Googled it and found out what I already know. I mentioned that a cell tower GENERATES a signal ... here's an excerpt from a site that will break it down for you

"What Components are in a Cell Tower?
Besides the physical building, there are many components to make a complete cell tower:

Physical space
Heating or air conditioning (or both, depending on climate)
Equipment (antennas, etc.)
Power
Backup power
Telephone lines (generally fiber)
Wiring"

AS YOU SEE , TELEPHONE LINES IE WIRELINE....
Here's the site so they can explain a few things for you...

Do you honestly believe that if you understand how a sell phone works, that will somehow save you from layoff? Nothing could be further from the truth! I would rather take my chances just eating the finished sausage, thank you!

We was told by our manager that we didn't need to know how sell phones work. We was willing to learn but the company said no thankyee.

The people that could care less and don't know how it works are the ones that end up surplused. Fine tune your skills! It's a shame to work for a telcom company and have no idea how it works.

Again, customers and most employees could care less how the sausage is made. They just want to enjoy the finished product. Some of you know the interworkings of the cellular landscape, that is wonderful, most could care less.

2022 revenue per org:
Mobility- 21.5 billion - revenue up
Consumer wireline- 3.2 billion - revenue up
Business wireline- 5.6 billion- revenue down

Apples & oranges. Mobility is nationwide & beyond. Wireline is limited to the ilec footprint we have in the 20 or so states. On average, “phone company” T only serves roughly 1/2 of the states they’re in(land wise). Add up all of the $ being made by all ILECS across the nation to accurately compare profits between Mobilty & wireline.

Wow! Someone clearly doesn't get it!!! What do you think FUBER REALLY IS?!?! IT IS WIRELINE FIBER IS A TYPE OF CABLE FOR THOSE THAT DONT UNDERSTAND. who do you THINK maintains it !?!? Copper has been tapered off, but we still maintain the fiber just like we used to do the copper. News flash, fiber IS WIRELINE!

This is sad and yet comical at the same time... I actually work on the backhaul/ transport network portion for at&t. So many points I want to comment on! To the person that said that Verizon is basically only wireless, is COMPLETLY wrong! We work with them DAILY in our group... Core Verizon. What alot of you don't seem to realize is... ALL TELCOMS WORK TOGETHER ACROSS THE US , PUERTO RICO , AND THE USVI.... ALL we do is (we being ALL TELCOMS, NOT JUST T) order the "last mile" from whomever is that Local exchange carrier (LEC) FOR THAT AREA. FYI, Verizon and Verizon Wireless are actually two different divisions with the same name.... wireless was a joint venture with Vodafone for years! Att has SEVERAL WHAT WE CALL out of region (OOR) CIRCUITS that we do have a footprint in.... the 21 states are only the locations that our NETWORK exists... the OTHER STATES, WE lease the lines from who is there.... CenturyLink, Verizon, Mobility (what we call Att wireless), Lumen, Spectrum and countless other lecs, cable companies including COMCAST also work with us. The United States carriers ALL rely on one another to reach their customers! Also, as for the non technical people on this site, a sell tower simply GENERATES the signal for a distance... but next time you pass one, look under it, there is a LITTLE building called a HUT! THAT IS WHERE ALL THE WIRING AND PHYSICAL TRANSPORT IE WIRELINE eqpt etc lies. Please educate yourselves because the assumptions posted on here is ridiculous.

" When cellphone to cellphone calls are connected through at&t equipment there is no need for wire line equipment. Fiber to the cell site from each central office connects when the call is routed. Inter office trunks over fiber are used. "

The interoffice fiber trunks, and all the other transport circuit that connects to a CO, ARE wireline.

"Wireline" is a lot more than switched POTS.

When cellphone to cellphone calls are connected through at&t equipment there is no need for wire line equipment. Fiber to the cell site from each central office connects when the call is routed. Inter office trunks over fiber are used. When a call is processed to a residential home or business that uses pots lines then the wireline portion of the network is utilized. Sorry, hard to explain to managers without cellular or basic telephony knowledge.

“Employees and customers alike could care less how the wireless service functions. Quit acting like you need to be a telecom engineer to use the service.”……employees should care or at least have a basic understanding of what the raggedy old wireline network is doing these days. While all of the failed mergers, flopped acquisitions, & pricy spin-offs were going on, Business Services was & still is bringing in tons of revenue for T by providing the necessary link for the wireless carriers to provide wireless service throughout the footprint. That business is also now spreading beyond the wireline footprint(T “local wire centers”) into other non-T telco territories further expanding revenue earnings.

“ Wireline also includes data pipes”

I believe those are referred to as “d-mb pipes”.

Wireline also includes data pipes, including how virtually all internet traffic gets from router to router, as well as private networks connect data centers, air traffic control to radar sites, etc... Remember "The Cloud"? A major part of that actually being useful is wireline (including fiber) connectivity.

“ They use the AT&T wireline network in nearly half the states.”

AT&T wireline foot print is in parts of 21 states.

The majority of the nation is not covered by AT&T. And AT&T is work this out behind the scenes, soon Blackrock will taking a bigger bite of that footprint.

Legacy is basically the old copper network. Which they are trying to replace as quickly as possible. Trying to lump that with the fiber is stretching the reality of the overall network goals but if it makes you feel better so be it. I basically have 1 physical wire coming into my house going to a router and a bunch of useless jacks in every room. That is the future of the copper world. Don’t keep up with Version but they basically sold everything West of the Mississippi to Frontier. They did keep the rest of the wireline last I heard.

Just think how quick Mobility could move if we eliminate the 22-state footprint. Issue search ring, secure cell structure location (servicing address), NAM issues RFP for those servicing LEC's, circuit (backhaul) complete. Not that anyone will buy AT&T Wireline/Backbone/Backhaul, too late for that. Just will need to be spun off like we did with DTV. Once spun off, this new wireline company would need to innovate on how to improve circuit cycle times to stay competitive when bidding on those Wireless LEC request for service. Currently AT&T circuit delivery has an estimated SLA of 90 days, which is a joke. Not very many carriers (T, vZw ,TMO) will be selecting a LEC with an ECD (expected circuit delivery) exceeding 90 days.

@1qtq…for the most part, the cell carriers(T, VZW, T-Mob) get fiber circuits from whoever the local telco carrier is(T, Verizon, Centurylink) for the particular tower they’re trying to serve.

It's not a matter of explaining the sausage making process to the customer; it's having a knowledgeable, educated workforce who understands ATT's network.

In fact, if we use the last few comments it appears that “mobility” companies that aren’t carrying the expense of their own wireline employees are just more successful.

Uhm. T mobile has no real wireline infrastructure and guess what ? They are the number one wireless company. AT&T doesn’t need to own the fiber any more than T mobile does. I could see centurylink , or whatever they call themselves today ,buying at&ts wireline assets. AT&Ts stock would soar from the immediate reduction in debt and being smaller and leaner. And that’s what it’s all about: Shareholders

People see only the phone in their hand and have no idea of the behind the scene hardware required to make mobility function! Most people and not just T employees are this way! No offense to anyone because in reality, why should anyone care how it works, it just does, you pay your monthly bill for the service provided and don't ask questions!
