Thread regarding Honeywell International Inc. layoffs

Senior employees at HON

I would've never imagined that one day, after years of giving my best to this company, I would be treated the way I am today.
As a senior employee, I feel unwelcome here anymore regardless of my skills. I wish someone had a different experience. Perhaps this is one of the worst companies in the industry for senior employees?

All companies are terribly ageist and H is among the worst.

In the current climate, people should plan to earn the bulk of their retirement by age 55, because after that, their odds of employment and salary equal to their accomplishment go down considerably. (Not for all, but for most.)

The remaining years between the "good" job and actual retirement will then be spent in a variety of lesser roles, usually with lesser pay, or perhaps as contractors.

Every accomplished person thinks it won't be them. But there is a very good chance that it will.

@1dgg+1mDeA14j, yep all valid, as well as a group of managers than never stood ground and required change but just went along with the massive failed compensation and pay for performance jargon. Managers and senior leaders called them the "Evil" band 4's to show disdain for the senior employees. Retain younger up and coming talent long term, not a chance, most flight risk demographic in history. Honeywell lost lots of real talent with these failed approaches of leadership and carried out by managers, maybe to the point of non recovery for any serious product development.

It’s shameful actually. I always wonder what the Board would have thought if they had awareness that this is the way I (and many others) are treated after so many years of dedicated service, awards and recognition for great performance. The others on the wall of shame should be those in HR - they were helpless. I’m gone now but can’t help but stay in touch with some of my old peers and many that I hired along the way. Based on what I hear I guess I’m fortunate.

Honeywell hates all employees but it hates the older ones the most. The reason? Simple: they cost more therefore reducing leadership bonuses. They typically earn more, use the healthcare more and take more time off. Honeywell wants new, low paid workers who don't take time off or get sick. Plus, the new employees haven't been burned out yet so they work hard till they figure out this place is a giant sweatshop.

Very few make it to normal retirement age in the conglomerates anymore. A massive change from 30-40 years ago, when many workers spent most or all of their working days in one company and worked until their chosen retirement date.

I got canned after 41 years. The last 5 were horrible. It was clear that there was no interest in anything I brought to the table. My new boss made me feel worthless. Everyone around me knew what was going on.

Strange old world. I have been here 17 years the last 5 being the most awful.
In that time the people I have seen pushed out were those with the most passion and talent (admittedly of all ages), those who did not toe the corporate line because the corporate line was f#cking everything up.
We have lost some irreplaceable people, some of the best in their industries. The current leadership does not give a damn about talent, skill and experience only the numbers on a cost cutting spreadsheet. I was once proud to work here, what a travesty.

There are a lot of us old people at honeywell.
Been here long enough that i am worried about mandatory retirement withdrawls.
Your perspective may be different but the people i see pushed out were unwilling to try new things.
How many honeyweller funerals have you attended this year?

Also Honeywell has always been a decade or two behind the curve so I should be retired by the time they figure out AI.... that is if the company even makes it that long :)

No such thing. Across the industry we don’t have enough workers. What you think is ageism is really just a skill mismatch.

If you think it is bad now wait five years. We will cut all those fat band 4 salaries to the bone as AI replaces 80% of software engineers, hw engineers, and other knowledge workers.

This may not be your situation, and I'm going to speak a tad cold hearted, but as an ex manager in Phoenix, there is a tremendous disparity in salaries in band 4 employees. It's from a compounding problem of how they implemented pay for performance. As well as specific circles of employees that basically band together and promote themselves at the expense of others. This lead to 2 groups of band 4s, with one making 50-120% more than the other. There is no mechanism to fix this other than riff or hope they retire/quit as their salary could pay for 2-2.5 new hires, or used to retain younger up and coming talent long term.

This is all a consequence of Honeywell not having a proper pipeline stragity, not having an actual pay for performance system, and not having auditing system of salaries.

HON, at least aerospace PHX, does not want senior employees, they are just an EID tagged with more $'s which in ALT eyes is a big liability which simply reduces harvesting profits. With this ALT view, you are simply treated as such in hopes you will leave. Their view is you can simply be replaced by anyone off the streets if need be, a FTE is a FTE, skill not a prerequisite. They couldn't hire a qualified candidate if they tried, but they have no desire too, bottom of the barrel is recruit of choice.

I got out at 62. I ran circles around the yougins. There is no replacement for smarts, plain and simple. What's better, now I get paid even more to keep my eye on them.

Ageism is becoming a real issue that is being swept under the carpet. It ain't gonna improve sadly. The only solace is that one day there will be a global meltdown as the 'me,me' generation look in the mirror and see grey hairs and wrinkles :)

Just think of it as a job that you go to get paid to continue your hobbies outside of Honeywell. Its a job, plain and simple. No point fussing over respect, under appreciated and all that nonsense. Every individual after you will better you in some way or another and that is just evolution of life. Most important is that you treat people with respect and move on these ill feelings that one might have working in this company.

It’s not just Honeywell (albeit they are the worst). All of corporate America have an extreme prejudice against older workers. This is really going to be a huge deal when they raise the retirement age to 70. Anyone over 60 will be forced into super low wages jobs like greeters and food service for 10 years.

Get used to it, old man. They can control the younger ones easier. The gen-zombie future-shapers jump into the cult full throttle. I got out at 60. I would have retired at this age anyway but I feel blessed I was never trapped in the insane asylum after the Intelligrated acquisition. What I found amazing was my supervisors, who I previously respected, bought into the brainwashing. I am happy to see most have broken away. Too bad they lost my respect forever. Of course, nobody cares. Anyway, simple advice, just get out.
