Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

The noise

How does anyone up top think in office is beneficial ? I get way more done at home when I don’t have to read an email 5 times because of all the office noise and constant chatter. Some teams don’t stop yapping from the time they get in until the time they leave .It’s constant distractions . I hate RTO

Fake news. No analysis was done by uncle Todd & his cronies

You may get way more done at home and I did as well, but we measured WFH productivity over a 2 year plus period and overall the productivity dropped quite a bit. They trusted us and apparently not enough of us were worthy of that trust. So we reap what we’ve sown and we all know the coworkers that ruined it for all of us.

Todd is gone and his two year promise of no layoffs for Triumph money has expired. Let’s move on.

No, it has everything to do with performance. Your manager is required to maintain forced rankings and if you are displaced, your performance is at or among the bottom of your team, from your manager’s perspective.

Think on it…. why would a manager want to displace an effective worker?

@1rle, of course Uncle Todd doesn't know the names of the people he fires. But it's HIS call. And it has nothing to do with performance.

@1lyb, nobody signs pledges for no layoffs, brainchild. Especially when they're not even CEO at the time. Nobody.

Todd of course accepted the Trump money which came with strings of no layoffs. Don’t worry, you’re far from alone in confusing Trump’s Tax reform stimulus with the COVID money. But you’re the only one who completely misunderstands both the Trump tax cuts and the incentives to reinvest and promise not to lay off to hire.

You actually can research online just as well as well as you can post, right? Oh wait… that’s not gonna work for you.

Todd doesn’t even know your name unless you’re stalking him or something.

Virtually all displacements stem from forced rankings from the manager. In some cases it is even at a higher level, where more experienced managers above the direct are well acquainted with an underperforming employee from years of supervising, working with and working around them. All it takes is a feeling, a history and familiarity.

While it may comfort you to think that Todd personally tagged you for displacement via Ouija Board, a personal all nighter digging through spans and layers to find you, that didn’t happen. It’s more likely that Todd knows your name because you kept taking his parking space or something.

Nobody up top thinks that in office hoteling is beneficial to workers. What they do think is that lower costs per seat in hoteling is a great way of saving money. Unfortunately they don’t factor in the loss of productivity nor does it even occur to them.

That having been said, just as the leaders fail to understand the issues in an open call center environment, the commuting workers cannot get over the loss of work at home.

A lot of slacking went on under Todd during WFH and productivity measurements captured quite a lot of it.

So both leadership and rank and file share quite a bit of the blame.

@apx, you really think managers decided on their own to fire people? It all came down from your Uncle Todd. And nobody "accepts" tax reform legislation. Especially Todd who wasn't even CEO when President Trump passed legislation to let companies keep a little more of their own profits. You must be a special kind of smart in the head.

Todd was not interested in layoffs and in fact accepted Trump Tax Reform legislation committing to no layoffs.

Your manager provided the termination list to Human Resources. Todd doesn’t know who you are. It was very hard to stand out as a non-performer under Todd. We don’t know your real story, but non performers were given Sub which is incredibly kind of Todd.

I don’t necessarily hate RTO…….I hate that the office is now a glorified call center with no peace and no privacy!

In office is a pain in the bu-t. Gotta commute round trip, less time in the day, all to hotel with random people all on Teams talking over one another in open spaces.

Unfortunately there was a lot of slacking in Todd’s era due to the no layoff policy. Only terminations for cause were processed and they were even given a package.

Can’t blame Robin for reacting to the hand that he was dealt. He saw how employees gamed Todd. We’ll never see home based again but you can’t say hat we didn’t give it a fair chance.

Sorry, your manager flagged you for termination based upon your performance.

Uncle Todd doesn’t even know your name.

@dhy, not sure when you were here, but before charlie tip toed into the bank they closed down one of the offices in our area and had more people then would fit into the other location. So most of us were hot bunking in little cubby holes and working two days at home. Years before covid. It's what successful companies have been doing for a decade.
Then during peek covid, uncle todd fired me and 15% of my group.

That real estate isn't cheap and they feel they need to justify the cost. Again, no vision just reaction.

When I worked at BNY, all the officers had a laptop at home in addition to their desktop in the office. We were all capable of working remotely (contingency after 9/11) but it was ALWAYS frowned upon if we did. Why would you think that would magically change?
