Just above the newest thread posted is a widget to select New or Active.
Default is new.
I select active and see all recent comments on any thread regardless of the down vote.
If a thread is important enough to keep active, post a comment and the downvotes will never be an issue for those who read this blog in active mode which does include the newest thread because the timestamp of any activity is how active threads are sorted.
This site took care of the downvotes issue for those that see the "active" option and use it.
