Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

big red flag

big red flag. if you are not already in a hub location better start looking for employment somewhere else.hub cities are already overtacked with managers. there are not enough places in hub cities for 50k+ managers to relocate.

Home Depot hires 60+ over qualified employees (electrical knowledge working in light bulb dept.) and provides OK health insurance. The catch is these older employees don't work past 65 (medicare) and retire before pension eligible. Run out unemployment but apply a month before to have time for dr-g test. Talk to other Home Depot employees in your area.

I was laid off (surplussed) from AT&T few years ago. I busted my a$$ off to improve the company. I am technical college graduate with the BA degree. I have been very optimistic I would find a job quickly having education, work experience. After many interviews, I still have no job. I have concluded, that age is a big factor. Companies do not want 50+ people. I want to say, AT&T does not care if anyone has college. I have been humiliated (yes, humiliated) by the upper management, that I wanted to seek additional education to earn MS degree to secure my position. Simply they told me they don't give a sh.t. I just wish I wasn't that stupid to accept work for this company 13 years ago, and looked elsewhere when younger.

I think if you finished college you may get a better job anyway. Too many AT&T managers should be in a craft position with their education level but they are afraid of hard work. Union employees make more than lower level management, wake up and smell the coffee.

You are kind of illustrating the point Mr. Einstein.

Do you think every manager that is told they need to uproot their family and move on their own dime in order to stay employed here, with zero assurances that they won't be caught up in a surplus right after doing so, is going to do that?

Maybe 5-10% will? If that..?

The corporation is well aware of this. And though Corey was trying to sound convincing the other day (" if we wanted to do a surplus, we'd just do a surplus...") ...they know this is going to result in reduced headcount, and that is their main intent. And guess what? They're going to continue having surplus events too.

I moved from Illinois to Texas. I was told the cost of living was lower in Texas and denied a raise until I fell into Texas guidelines.

Move to California and request a realignment to California guidelines.
I suspect there will be no increase, but on the low end of scale, you may last a few rounds of surplus.

They may start looking at a managers university degree if any. I had an associates degree with additional college semester hours and an FCC general radiotelephone operators license when I worked at AT&T as a technician. Some of my managers only had high school diploma’s. Maybe you can go back to college.
