Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

when we say optional we really mean mandatory

I love how at the enterprise level they tell us things are optional but then our group leadership says it isn't. case in point... self evaluations.

“BUT if I I ask my team to do something … they should do it.”

Exactly the a-hole WF leadership mentality in a nutshell. Congrats, you’ll go far.

i don't mind doing it, it's just the inconsistency across the various orgs. when they say optional they really mean it's optional for managers to have there employees do it. I always do them and find it a good way to have everything your doing documented in case your managers eval of you is totally different. I would also argue that if all things are equal and managers are determining ratings, I'm gonna give the person who did it a higher rating than the person who didn't.

People just don't get it.

  1. LOB's are free to set their own expectations. Even managers can set their own expectations. Just because the enterprise says it's optional that doesn't mean that it won't be required by your leadership.
  1. I've never heard of someone getting canned because they didn't do a self-assessment BUT if I ask my team (or my leadership group asks my team) to do something they should do it. Failure to write a self-assessment in that situation is no different than any time I ask my team to do something and they don't do it.
  1. A self-assessment won't offer any protection. However, it is in your best interest to spend the time to write them. A good manager will absolutely include content from an employees self-assessment. Having a reminder to the manager of your major accomplishments is a huge help in the review writing process. The process, by the way, is a total pain for every single manager. Helping your manager out at review time will never hurt you and it can often benefit you significantly.

I'm always amazed that people dig their heels in on something that takes 15-30 minutes every 6 months and can absolutely help your compensation and bonus and growth opportunities. So short-sighted. But then again, that describes about 80% of the people that post in this forum.

LMAO the guy that thinks evaluations will "protect you from the unfair rating system". Anyone who has been here for any yearly review knows that by the time your review is presented to you, it already been finalized and can not be undone. You can make comments when you accept the review, it is not going to change it and probably will draw additional unwanted attention to yourself .

Why would anyone not do self evaluations? It is really the only way to protect yourself against unfair ratings by documenting your accomplishments in writing.

If you are an excellent employee, then tell them no, it's optional, not doing it. Call their bluff. Man up for once in your life, honestly.

Funny how something that’s “Optional” (but really isn’t) has no bearing on what management opts to rate us at at mid year and year end. It’s an exercise in futility and stupidity. Why should any of us even waste the time if our ranking is already decided. What a farce.🤦🏻‍♂️

Yep. And if you don’t do it, it’s used against you.
