Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Guarantee of employment

Will those who choose to relocate to one of the hubs have guaranteed employment for at least five years? Relocating your family and your entire life is not a small thing. I can't imagine how somebody would feel to do all that just to find him or herself laid off within the next 12 months.

Move? For AT&T? You'll be out the door before the U-haul contract expires

No guarantees. In fact, with the state of AT&T right now I would hazard a guess that at least 1-2K of folks who do relocate will be surplussed in a year. Oh, and they ain't paying relocation according to what I've been told by sources fairly high (SVP level). What folks are failing to see is that they want you to decide not to relocate. This is how you shed thousands of high paying jobs without a layoff and AT&T has promised 15 billion in cost reduction this year to Wall Street.

Here's the deal for some occupationals.
*Employees transferred via Article 16 who meet the relocation criteria in Article 16,
Paragraph 7(a), and are compensated for actually relocating their residence,
shall be offered the opportunity to move back to the former location with relocation
compensation for the lesser of: (1) the termination allowance for which they would
have been eligible upon layoff; or (2) $13,000.00 if the following conditions are
met:
(1) The employee is laid off at the new site within three (3) years of
placement; and
(2) The employee relocates back to the original geographical location; and
(3) The employee does not qualify for any other AT&T provided relocation
compensation program*

Aside from that, an occupational employee covered under these terms should, in addition, get severance under the contract at the new place.

Lay off the crack. This is the most ridiculous post I have seen on here yet. Move at your own cost and risk. There are no guarantees.

Stankey lied, there is no relocation assistance. I know others that have previously moved to keep their jobs without relocation.

yes, it is part of the "generous relocation package" stankey talked about.

No. They won't guarantee you anything. Still want to move?
They can let you go the minute you get there, force you to pay to get your stuff out of storage, and leave you homeless and broke.

Anyone considering a move, I would get something in writing and go over it with a lawyer prior to agreeing to it.

OP posed both a legitimate question and a coffee-snorting howler.

I don't trust the company to follow through on any promises made for five years. That kind of guarantee pretty hard to get anywhere today.

This is especially true as there may be a merger, breakup, or change of command as dismal results and missed numbers pile up. Not a Level 6? Nothing is certain.

I don't think the question is unreasonable, and I don't think we should be piling up on OP for asking. Like others have said, no, unfortunately there is no guarantee of any kind, not even that you'll have a job for 6 months after you move, so unless you're single, or a couple with no school aged children, unless you're renting and can very easily pack up and move, I don't think it makes any sense to do it for a job. Definitely not this job.

There are no guarantees period. The company may very well not even exist in 5 years, at least not as we know it today.

Anyone employed by AT&T should move on to better employment elsewhere. There are tons of great jobs out there now. If you're not within months of reaching full retirement, run. AT&T is in a nose-dive thanks to the leadership of the last 15 years and current leadership.

Told no, but there is another side where the good workers in dallas are going to find themselves unreleasable (less promotions) as teams worry they will have more open roles than qualified people at the end of year and scramble to backfill and dont want their best players to be targets. also some good managers telling their impacted employees to not focus on moving to dallas but more on their resume as the reductions happen at the same time and may not have an option.

OMG, that literally made me laugh while I was eating. OP obviously either just started or has never worked at ATT. There are zero promises made to folks who relocate. You can easily find accounts from people who relocated and were then either surplussed or told to move again long, long before five years.
