Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Verizon Layoffs - Age Discrimination???

word on the street is VZ is targeting older employees and long tenured employees. Something smells unethical to me!

The writing has been on the wall for a looooong time. Take the money and run to a company that is growing and values skill sets. It becomes much clearer once you escape the negativity surrounding VZ. Life is too short….. take your skills to someone that recognizes them.

No…i was older than many of my teammates that were laid off. I also made more money. I finally got laid off after being safe for several rounds when they just eliminated the position

Is there discrimination at Verizon? You bet!

But most of that discrimination has to do with whether you are part of or accepted by the crew or not. And there are many different crews inside the company.

But they lay people off by algorithm used by HR which makes them sue-proof.

That 28 yr old sales architect was probably o the wireline side and the base is $125k and $150 plus at plan. Wireless base is lower for the same position

longer tenured usually means higher compensation, which also means higher wage, higher health care costs, more time off for health related issues, etc. Say what you will about unions, but they absolutely respect and protect seniority.

Not AGE but WAGE . If you have been here for years you are replaceable for someone at a severely reduced WAGE.

I was laid off after long 20 years with the company. Performed every year plus had positive attitude and getting close to 60 yo. I think it was age discrimination. Why else would they let top performer go?

Yep happened to my family income earners and they provide a spreadsheet with ages, job titles, etc. with severances. It clearly shows thought that they have covered their rear ends by invoking some loophole in the older workers' discrimination act (I forget what it's called right now). they know how to get around it and get away with it. Sucks.

Ackchyually, tenure is a weighted bias. The longer you've been there the higher your preference ranks should staying be your choice.

It's not age discrimination, sorry. Mostly strategic initiatives and bad performers and bad luck. 6000 plus customer reps are being let go... nothing to do with age. Some people are so bad that we'd rather get rid of them without being able to replace them than keep them.

@mxx+1mObngXL Not sure where you got your information but my husband was part of GNT and he was most definitely let go.

I know plenty of people in their 20s and 30s who were laid off in the last 2 rounds.

Download the org chart from VP level on down into excel. HR doesn't make that easy so it will be a lot of manual work. Columns should be name, salary grade, title, gender (from name or "pronoun"). If you are in GNT/IT, have a column whether from India (guess from name). Also include an age/40+ column.

Then analyze the data. What % of SG5 are male, female? What % are from India? Do this for all SGs/titles.

You should get a report of who was laid off (maybe you only get that report if you are over 40?). It won't have names. But you will see the salary grade, age and who they worked for (Director) of the people RIFd. You can probably figure out their name from there.

If it looks like discrimination, ie if 90% of the employees in the organization are from India yet ALL of the RIFs were American or 100% of the RIFs were over 40, give the data to your employment lawyer.

Sure is age discrimination and saw it years ago in my department. Everyone was over 50 years old and there were several let go.

I wish I would have been laid off. I'm almost 20 years in. I would have taken the severance and found a new job. I wish good luck to all impacted!

Verizon laid off 1500 from IT this week, and so far they all seem to be well performing people with over 25 years service. Not only is a huge amount of knowledge being lost, but so is any remaining idea that upper management cares about loyalty.

This doesn't make sense. Longer tenured employees usually are paid less than newer employees and also cost much more to sever. It's highly likely that a longer tenured employee or older employee has become complacent (no learning, no new roles, etc) which might be why one of them was let go over a new employee but otherwise it makes zero sense.

Over 50. Seek a lawyer and have them read over everything you have to sign. They ask if you have a age discrimination suit.

I have absolutely no doubt that longer tenured and higher cost employees within pay bands are among several criteria used. I was a high performer in a wide range of highly visible roles with increasing responsibilities for almost 30 years with Verizon. Last fall, it was finally my turn. If your service is indeed severed, part of your informational packet will include a summary of the pay band and tenure of everyone impacted. It will indeed skew to the higher end as the action is fully intended to cut costs and literally nothing else. That said, the actions are completely legal. This is merely round 7.3 of the Verizon Squid Game.
