I'm in the process of being hired as a contractor. This hiring process began before RTO mandate went into effect.
I was told that the position I applied for is virtual and I should not be impacted.
I've yet to be given a laptop so I don't have any insight to emails or other colleagues to communicate with so I'm honestly looking for solid information.

Genius, the position will open up in mid-June or early July. I can't believe I even have to explain that to a grown person. Sigh.

You were hired in anticipation of a mass exodus of employees. You are replacing an employee who is not going to relocate or is too marketable to stay. Enjoy not working and getting paid for a while.

Most people on this board will be offered emergency contractor positions after this RTO strategy fails. You will make more money and will have more freedom. Enjoy the chaos, if you play your cards right you can get a severance, a vacation and pay raise.
That is always between you and your contract company. I imagine the cases where T wants their contractors on site are pretty rare now.
In my location, contractors all work remotely. Some also work four ten hour days and get a long weekend every week.

I was just offered a position as a contractor (ex T employee for 25 years) and was told that I would be remote and that RTO did not apply to me.
I had a meeting a few days ago and was informed that my start date could be mid-June or early July.
Bad news buddy , rumour is several contractors cuts are coming, RTO is irrelevant because contracting agreements are with contracting companies not individuals.
My recommendation don't make any big personal economic decisions until your 3-6 months in the position.
Stay in your lane.
No, RTO only applies to T employs.
