Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Just a move to thin the herd on the cheap

Show up 3 days a week for a few months and then it will go back to WFH and get the job done and you are all set. They don't have the space or facilities or planning skills to pull this off for long so this initial wave will take out the weak and the sick in the force. The problem over the years has always been VPs and Empire Building and then the inability to make strategic cuts based on the individual and not the work group. Give it a few months and this will blow over like the disaster we all know it is and the executives will come back with the old "You spoke and we listened....."

"Your position and/or job is not being terminated. That's the loophole."

Why are so many of you so cynical? My position on this is simple, if they wanted a loophole, they wouldn't even put any mentions of the Severance into the FAQ, and when asked on Town halls, they wouldn't instantly answer "Yes", so as of right now, I'm perfectly confident there will be severance packages offered to this of us who qualifies.

Think about it, logically. Companies are not required to pay any severance packages, so why do they? AT&T has established it severance policy in 1992, and it was updated in the beginning of this year. It's still very much active and current. They don't mind paying for severance because it actually saves them money in the long run, and removes further complications. It helps them avoid dealing with unemployment for god knows how long. It saves them from potential lawsuits. And finally, it helps them save face with the general public and stockholders. Those things are much more valuable than "up to" 50% of your salary as a one time payment.

Reapplying for the same job in a different location is normal. HR required Reps in mobility call centers who wanted to WFH - instead of continuing to work in-center, to apply to an open req for the identical job that was designated as a WFH position. Part of the WFH position required a reliable internet connection.

What org is being told they will have to reapply for their job post-relocation? I haven't heard that scenario from the Legg ATS org.

1gsg+1mT9tHie - Hope you're right. Let us know if you get offered a severance or paid relocation.

“ Your position and/or job is not being terminated. That's the loophole“

No. But YOU will be terminated after you inform them you won’t relocate to wherever your job has moved. And you will be eligible for severance under the current plan, because it is an involuntary termination due to structural or business changes.

I knew you wouldn’t read it.

I find it sadistic to tell people

  1. your job is moving to Dallas
  2. you have to relo on your own dime 3) and if you are still onboard with those plans you have to apply for your own position in Dallas and may not be selected as the candidate.

What Pycho thought of that arrangement.

“ Think about it! AT&T is not telling you do not have a job. It is your choice...“

Don’t think about it.
Read the policy, and try to comprehend it (but we both know you won’t read it).

The policy clearly refers to involuntary termination as a result of business or structural changes, which is exactly what this is. And those affected that way ARE eligible for severance. You are not voluntarily resigning. Educate yourself.

"Not sure what you are implying but if you do not move, you will be involuntarily separated from the company (Surplussed) and you WILL GET SEVERANCE. You have no clue what you are talking about if you say otherwise". You are voluntarily resigning (not surplussed) without severance because you are not willing to move! Think about it! AT&T is not telling you do not have a job. It is your choice...

"This is what I expect to happen as someone in Atlanta. But I feel bad for the people in other locations." ... Do not think you're safe!!
Its all about "collaboration with your team". Your designation could change too. Perhaps Dallas or a hub that will eventually close or your position will be eliminated.

"You are NOT being laid off. You are making a conscious choice to not follow the work. You are electing to leave. He’s turned this all back on us. I can just hear him. “We gave our folks a great opportunity to follow their work and live our purpose in one of our key locations and they declined. While we would have preferred to keep our workforce in tact, we wish these people nothing but the best in support of their personal decision to leave the company”. Wake up people! "

We’ve already been told very few will get a relo package (senior levels only) and no one is getting remote. For the rest it is going to be move on your own dime. Job is in Atlanta or Dallas, move or get let go. You’ll need to pay your own moving expenses. Also it must be a permanent move, so no driving in to the hub 3 days and back home stuff. All good, I don’t have a pension so I’ll take my severance and peace out. For those with pensions and a couple years or months left, they are really freaking out. Feel bad for them, kind of, they’ll be ok longer term. For me, I’ll be shopping job offers, already getting some. Good luck for the remainder of the year, the company is going to be in rough shape after this and struggle to operate. Very d-mb move by the top, but then again, they are known for d-mb moves. They don’t even realize how bad of a corner they just put themselves in.

"They aren't making everyone move across the country just so that we can go back to WFH in three months."

As someone who moved in the Collab zone era, I wouldn't be so sure. These things are cyclical.

There will be no relocation offer for most of the people, only for some leadership positions. You position will be eliminated and replaced by new hire in India.

There will be no relocation, no severance. If you don't show up for your assignment and log the time you are fired. Stankey is desperate and the organization is in tatters. You can't miss a cash flow guidance that bad being a dividend payer and have your hands on the wheel and controls of the company. Stankey signaled that neither he nor the CFO have control of the pulse. Stankey is desperate and his irrationality and actions are showing it.

What don’t you get? They don’t want you to move. You're not going to be given an opportunity to move. You’re being laid off.

Those who move for ATT will be few. No relocation, no guarantees, then people won't move. Look how many dolts relocated to California from much lower cost areas only to get layed off within a couple of years. People are selling their houses or their 4% home loan for this dumpster fire. Dirty Pool by the company because they simple don't know how to run a business. Stankey and the entire board need to go but there appears to be something incestuous about it all. How many massive blunders and overall ineptitude is leadership allowed? Apparently at ATT it is limitless.
