Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Divestiture plans

I think soon AT&T will be divesting again.

Wireless business
Directv remaining 70%
Fiber and broadband internet
Wireline whatever is left

They are downsizing to make these businesses attractive for potential suitors.
Legg’s org will become redundant and most cuts will be there.

There is 100’s of millions of dollars of copper plant that is slowly but surely being retired. With a run up in copper demand for ev manufacturing T will go after it sooner rather than later. Contract work.

Frontier Communications overbuilt one of their serving areas with fiber using contractors. Now the contractor I&R trucks are the only vehicles to be seen. They no longer have a construction yard nor an I&R storeroom there. Only one company vehicle is a mini van parked at the CO. So never say it could not happen here.

“Hiring Prem Tech” that’s easy. Flimsy contract with no job security. When the work slows you go. It cost the company nothing. Prem tech will never be more than Prem tech. Sure a few will slip through but all in all they’re disposable. Wake up. Any job that has no quitting time and you need to be “released” to end your day says it all. Dead end job.

Hands on will not be contracted because the higher ups want to keep the work in-house. We're hiring more technicians in my state just to cover all of the upcoming work. I guess that's a good thing!

NO way in the world that the FCC and DOJ will allow ATT and Verizon to complete a merger! If they wouldn't allow TMOB and ATT to merge, then this certainly will not occur. You heard it here first!

“Hands on” will be contracted out. Too much wasted time and money on outside plant workforce. The disability/workman’s compensation savings alone is in the tens of millions. Fiber has made the placing and splicing a no brainer. Like plastic pipe to plumbing. Very little “craftsmanship “ required.

Verizon + AT&T = brilliant

This is the culminating final act of the RBOC re-consolidation. Why didn’t I see this coming?

I’m pretty sure that SBC always saw this as “the one that got away.”

Nobody in their right mind would buy the copper plant.

This company is getting very lean on headcount as a preparatory plan planning to merge with Verizon. Verizon and ATT will soon be one under the ATT name but Verizon management. You heard it here first.

“A majority of longterm T employees are planning to stay until the very end knowing they don’t have current marketable skills in the commercial sector and will have little to no options for future employment in the technology sector. This is why fear and denial is so widespread on this board.”

Very well said……sad, but true.

It's because everyone has a vested interest in hoping it works out. As in, pensions and 401K, and extended PTO (although less these days). So a HUGE portion of people want to stay and see what happens. Or they have only 2-5 year until retirement.

Sorry folks, cut your losses and RUN!

What is really sad are the people on this board that believe everything is ok and T will pull out of this tailspin. What planet are these people from. The management of this company resembles the management of this country’s finances…an absolute disaster. It’s not sustainable, there is no long term employment for anyone here, benefits are zilch and we are the laughing stock of the telecom sector not to mention going from arguably 1st to last in mobility in just 10 short years. Most are folks that have politically aligned themselves with management to be the last on the surplus list…..guess what ? Those days are over, so deliver your last boss’s day card and jelly of the month certificate and start looking. Free ride is over…

Significant downsizing of headcount , reduction in benefits and lack of technology investment is typical for a company preparing to sell assets.

They are downsizing to make business attractive to itself. Too many workers underperforming. Time to actually work for your paycheck.

This company is SBC at its core which is rotten. SBC is never known for technology innovation or vision. It has the most incompetent and bureaucratic management. All it has been doing was acquiring and dumping companies & business assets. It's going to turn back to its former self while destroying lives and everything it touched along the way.

The entire business will be sliced and diced into financially appealing bites to the highest bidders. The only T branded pieces left will be mobility and broadband which will continue to be converted to non badged indirect sales , service, billing and engineering resources. If you think your safe there, you probably are for 12 months +/-.

I agree, streamlining is the first step, headcount reduction is number two and reduction of debt. AT&T will be a platform for the acquiring company.

I agree, this will be necessary and I don't think anyone cares about keeping the brand alive at this point. We will go the way of Blockbuster, Pan American Airways, Circuit City, and Lehman Brothers. We will be the subject of many MBA schools curriculums and Randall and & John will go down in history as the most discussed icons of the American business ethos ever.
