Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

WF reference question

Potentially in some trouble, ultimately due to long-term issues with anxiety and depression. If I get fired (or "laid off" but really fired), will that show up on my formal WF reference? Or will they just give dates?

I have a previous WF manager who's still at the bank in another role who will give me a great reference, so will several co-workers, but I'm worried about the formal WF reference. I have healthy savings, so wondering if I should jump before I'm pushed to avoid the bad reference.

I think it’s a pretty long process to fire someone for-cause simply due to performance. Chances are you would’ve gotten at least one bad year-end review and would’ve been put on a PIP or something long before that would happen. So unless you’ve done something illegal, I’d assume if they’re looking to get rid of you they’ll just do it and you’ll go through the normal displacement/severance process. Once that’s done I think you could just present it to potential future employers as having been laid off, and WFC won’t say anything otherwise.

OP, I'm in the same boat as you. I asked my doctor to write me out for a stress leave. He said it would just make things much worse - he told me to just get counseling. I do believe him, he's heard this so many times. Plus whenever I'm out they come up with something I didn't do or messed up because I'm so stressed. I gave up, I'm taking early retirement and hope I can survive. Good luck to you

No worries. They can only give dates you worked in this he&l hole. You will come out mentally on top once you can escape this abusive place

Take care of yourself first.

The reason I say this is because while I don’t have concrete evidence, I’m almost positive that Wells Fargo doesn’t consider if or ask themselves, “wow I hope that one employee we overworked and who posted his concern on the layoff blog / MySpace equivalent is okay before we make more decisions that benefit us.”

OP here. Thanks for the replies.

Definitely sounds like there is no benefit to resigning vs being fired/laid off in terms of future references. Obviously future employers will ask about circumstances of leaving prior jobs, but if WF doesn't mention why I left in my reference, then there's no point in resigning.

I am seeing a professional and will ask them about help me get stress leave. Looks like I have FMLA or Short-term disability open to me (as well as PTO of course). Yeah I'm aware this won't protect me fully from being fired but will at least give me time to think.

Is it safe to discuss my leave options openly with Employee Assistance, as they're paid by WF?

When our team had a big layoff last winter, one person impacted had a WFH accomodation and anther was on medical leave. Neither of these protects you from layoffs.

whether you get laid off or fired for cause, the reference is still the same - dates you worked - that's it.

what some on this thread have said about not being fireable if you are on an accommodation or leave is not true. you can be displaced with either of those circumstances.

All they will give is dates and job title IIRC, don't worry about it OP. There's been many huge lawsuits about former employers kneecapping workers via bad references, so no large corp wants to 'go there'.

In the meantime, I would highly recommend seeing a professional to get help. You may be able to get a formal accommodation of some kind and that will keep you as safe as you can be. No one is totally safe, but you'd be in a good position.

Good luck, seriously.

It’s true - if you apply for some sort of accommodation you will never have to worry about getting fired. All the stress you’re currently feeling will transfer from you to your manager.

Why would you get fired? Just not doing your job? Maybe reach out to employee assistance to see what options you have.

WF employees are not allowed to give references

Can you get a medical accommodation for a little? It’s hard for wells to reject those.
