Since Jan 2022, we are nearing 350L tech employees laid off.

Actually, this is NOTHING. During the Tech Bubble burst from 2000 - 2003, there were MILLIONS laid off in technology. I was one of them with Nortel Networks at the time, the Richardson, TX campus went from 25,000 employees to a GHOST TOWN. Lucent Technologies laid off 60,000 employees in ONE DAY. Look up the history, if you are young and see. TELECOM did the majority of the layoff's.

FYI Verizon laid off all Social Media U.S. based internal employees. Allowed reps to reply. They rehired some of the worst ones and did not hire some top ranking employees. So sad.

What percentage of the workers laid off are American and what percentage are H1B?

If a large number those laid off were American, than the companies listed above should not be allowed to hire any H1Bs in 2023.

A recent analysis by the EPI found that the top 30 H-1B employers hired 34,000 new H-1B workers in 2022 and laid off at least 85,000 workers in 2022 and early 2023.

So even if the companies above did lay off H1Bs, why do they get to hire/bring in new ones? What is going on?

There should be a complete freeze on all H1Bs in the US. But per USCIS, for FY 2023, they received 483,927 H-1B registrations and selected 127,600 registrations.

It’s really not that massive and many of those companies have shifted jobs and hired in other divisions. That being said.. I feel bad for everyone that’s losing a job.. people are more then numbers.

Saw an article today from the former HR VP from Microsoft. He essentially says that once one of them started, they all felt the 'optics' were okay to implement their downsizing plans to reverse the over hiring/ramp up during Covid.
