Verizon grapples with rising churn

https://www.fiercewireless.com/wireless/verizons-rising-churn-problem

Verizon’s low churn rates were once the envy of the industry, but those days are gone.

“Verizon’s once industry-best churn rate has been steadily rising for nearly three straight years,” wrote MoffettNathanson analyst Craig Moffett in a report for investors Tuesday. “Six months ago, they called this a ‘churn bubble’ that will pass. It hasn’t… Verizon’s churn problem is shocking.”

Through a combination of weakening value proposition – Verizon is no longer convincing customers that its network is the industry’s best – and its “understandable reticence” about subsidizing free handsets for retention means Verizon is struggling to keep its customers, Moffett wrote. Meanwhile, AT&T consistently uses handset subsidies and T-Mobile recently did so with its new Go5G plans, he noted.

Churn measures the rate at which customers are leaving a carrier and go to another one. Verizon reported Q1 2023 retail postpaid phone churn of 0.90% compared to the Q1 2022 churn rate of 0.83%.

If you can speak Telugu, Tamil, Kannada or Malayalam, you're safe. Verizon is rapidly heading to India and heaven help the remaining stateside employees at ALL levels.

"This truly can't be a surprise to Verizon."

Surprise, surprise, but it actually is. These folks actually believed in their mumbo-jumbo despite the science and cash flows.

This truly can't be a surprise to Verizon. The 5G network, outside of major cities is spotty at best, and obviously there's no price advantage for VZ. This is a long haul turnaround at best.

Vz’s 5G/C-band speed in town (MSA) is terrible! I average 140down/16up with the latest “I” device in multiple west coast markets. I used to get better data rates with 4G AWS. I receive a 25% discount as a retiree and TMO can still come in lower than my current Vz bill (they used to offer 50% discount to retirees until they chose to sc--w their retiring workforce by reducing the discount by half). The only thing keeping me on Big Red is their coverage is currently better in the MSA/rural areas. I suspect that when the TMO/Sprint network merger is complete this may change.

Depending on situation, I'll sometimes refer people to Consumer Cellular instead. Good prices, competent & polite US-based support (what a concept!), and network powered by either T or TMUS.

I am seriously looking at approaching T-Mobile to see if they can put together a package for "Verizon Retirees". There is no more customer service as detailed below and trying to find any help in the once iconic Verizon Wireless store is like entering a Kafka novel.

It is no longer worth the price considering what Visible and Optimum users pay for the exact same service on the exact same network. What a clown show!

Customer Service is the reason, outsourcing is finally impacting Verizon in a way they didn't anticipate. Speaking to people in the 3rd world when you are paying 1st world prices is exactly why people are leaving. Culture is different and language as well. Verizon will continue to bleed out due to poor or lower quality customer service. It's that simple, why would anyone who isn't a direct employee of Verizon care about saving lines/ customers???
