If your retirement eligible and leave as part of the RA you get Cobra medical insurance rates for 18 months. This rate is slightly higher (5%) than the current rate but is much better than the rate you would pay as a retiree which could be three times as high. Also, you receive three months compensation, unused vacation days, and $2,500 for career training.

For unemployment - in most states "For cause" (which includes PIP) is not eligible for benefits.

BUT That can generally be challenged (I did)

File for UE
UE will likely come back to you with "but you were dismissed for cause"
Appeal with "No, ...." and give them your sad story
UE will go back to IBM/company du jour and ask for details
Company (du jour) will almost NEVER respond back with details - for fear of suit
UE will rule in your favor.

You get benefits.

Worked for me in NC

To "@hca+1mqx4xNF" et all (eg volunteering)
(1) they have a stated policy of not accepting volunteers (reasoning - they're "smart" in who they choose)
(2) if they know you're interested - then they'll let you leave and not have to offer you separation pay.

So remember - they do NOT accept volunteers and will actively facilitate your own actionable retirement/separation so as to offer separation.

Retire is ALWAYS AN OPTION. Doesn't matter how you're dismissed - if you're eligible to retire - then you're eligible for retirement benefits. And this does NOT require "Workday 'Retirement'"

Contact Fidelity for Retirement Counseling and they'll walk you through all your options.

Milk it! Let them put you on a PIP. If you’re ready to retire, who cares that you leave on a high note or low note? Take your sick days you have accumulated, summer is coming and why not get paid for your vacations? With the current economy, they want to let go people so bad. Don’t mention you want to retire. Ride the wave.

IF get PIP'ed or POP'ed you get unemployment benefits. On other hand, won't be eligible for retiree benefits. Not sure value of either

I hinted at considering retirement and my manager told me that he could put me on the next RA that rolled around, figuring it would be a win-win. The next RA rolled around and they didn't put me on it. My heart had already embraced the thought of retirement and EVERY.LITTLE.THING was getting on my nerves, so I decided to not wait for an RA that might come. Retired 4 years and left with the satisfaction of having had a good career instead of an ego crushing RA or PIP

Not clear you will have a choice either way. (Not a PIP, but) I raised my hand as high as it would go to say "pick me for the next RA" before I retired. As soon as they heard that I would consider leaving on my own, they would NOT make any sort of deal. If they even sniff that you might retire, (a) they won't do anything to get you extra $ (b) you are on "the list."

Depends. Do you want to leave on a high note or a low one?
