It’s pretty sad. Midland is the source of unimaginable wealth but all of it is siphoned away elsewhere. It could have been as prosperous as Dubai if people had chosen to invest in it and local leaders had more vision.

@1wzv+1ms9FoGR As an elementary teacher being able to communicate is a pretty basic requirement

I had to pull my kids out of school in Midland and homeschool them when they came home telling me they couldn’t understand their teachers broken English. I met the teacher and it was obvious English was not her native language. Her grammar and pronunciation were terrible. I’m not putting down immigrants but for a teacher it is important to me that they be fluent in the language they are using to teach in.

The schools are also a hard sell. One out of every three residents in the Permian reads below a third-grade level, Bentley said in written testimony before the US House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources earlier this year.

Midland Independent School District spends $8,865 per student each year, according to National Center for Education Statistics data. If you ask NCES to compare that to US districts with similar demographics or other Texas cities, Midland is at the bottom of the list.

Oh, it sounds like an expat assignment, Nigeria Lagos or Port Harcourt maybe. Ha! Not worth relocating a family there. Maybe they could make it a rotational assignment 2 weeks on, 3 weeks off; with bonus pay.

But sometimes reporters are bias. Maybe someone can offer a different view of the place.

Thanks for sharing
