Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Anyone relate?

I’m a solid but not a top performer. I know if not this year, then next, I’ll very likely be terminated. I’d leave now, but I need the severance. That leaves me with no motivation to go above and beyond my job requirements. My guess is there are many more in the same boat. True?

You've essentially described every T employee from L1 - L3.

“Connection award”.

Lol. I get one every year yet I only put in about 30 hours a week. It’s not how busy and productive you are. It’s how busy and productive your boss thinks you are.

You should be asking your manager why you are not getting a connection award !!!!

The only difference between a top performer and a middle performer is about 1-2% on your annual raise. Presuming neither is at the top of the pay band. I've had top marks the last five years and it has mostly just given me more work. I feel like a dope.

I agree with the original poster. I strongly DISAGREE with the person who posted this:

"Maybe take a little initiative and move into the top performer category, then you are less likely to get laid off. What a thought. This site proves we are over-staffed with a lot of lazy folks just collecting a paycheck."

i'm an L2 and have always taken initiative. I've learned more about my areas (and beyond) than my peers. I regularly coach L3s in the problem space that I work in. Do I get recognized for this? Nope. I get "oaky" raises, no promotions, no connection awards (do they even exist anymore?) . I even take on the jobs that others don't want to do, then get bashed if there are challenges to completing those tasks (which is why they were not completed by others and nobody else was willing to step up to the plate). But complete them I do, and I do my best to make sure everything is done thoroughly and correctly.

I'm done giving this company my all. I will still do my job ethically an professionally, but gone are the days of giving up sleep, weekends, and days off for AT&T. I'm putting myself first now.

I plan to leave in one year. If I get laid off prior to that, it would be a small blessing. But the one extra year gives me to leave in a good position monetarily with pension and 401 K (assuming that they don't mess up the remaining pension benefits in the mean time) without the severance and unemployment compensation that I would get if laid off.

The problem with the second poster's reference that I cited is that the upper levels of management who are in charge of performance are simply not capable of recognizing good performance when it hits them over the head. Instead, it's all about glitz, beautiful power points, and favoritism. I don't doubt that there is value in having the latter type of "skills", but that's not the direction that I want to go in with respect to overall career development.

Best of luck to all.

Trading time for money every two weeks folks. That’s the new future. That’s it. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Yo- go find another job. You did not say if you are union or non-union (typical of posts on this site, lacking important details) or what type of work you do, etc, or what your severance would be.

I've never gotten a bad review and often times was in the top bin of the rankings. Yet my salary according to the AT&T salary bands is below the mid level for my job. At this point I say what's the use of putting in extra work if that's what it got me.

You can thumb down me all you want for attitude but if this is how the company rewards people, it's no motivation.

If you don't have the seniority to save your job, then yes, you might as well give your job performance the bare minimum if you know your days are numbered! In my case I do have the seniority to save my job, but am not sure the status of my position in the future. I would love to be laid off, but why leave when it's easy money!

Maybe take a little initiative and move into the top performer category, then you are less likely to get laid off. What a thought. This site proves we are over-staffed with a lot of lazy folks just collecting a paycheck. Us to performers are just doing your jobs for you. Move along already,
