Reality vs projection is much different, the C-suite talking heads don’t have a clue about operations, technical migration and regulations. It takes a long time to move a large entity, many moving parts just like the government. The central office is still the hub for all communications including cellular. CO’s are soon to have more MTSO equipment added along with the possibility of Data center too in certain locations.
Fiber was projected in the 80’s to take over all legacy within a matter of a few years, what year is it now? Barely have a little over 33% fiber coverage for the entire AT&T footprint. The big goal now is to reduce copper/analog equipment, transport and facilities to 50% by end of 2024 or 2025. A lot of areas will no longer be served by copper nor has fiber so if available the customer will now be offered fixed wireless. That is a temporary solution due to its capacity limits as confirmed by the CFO and McElfresh in recent interviews. The next best AT&T product for rural or small communities besides fiber is satellite which the company has an agreement with another company (not Elon) but it is in its infancy and not commercially successful yet.
In conclusion: There is a technological shift in equipment, transport, support and products so expect a lot of changes over the next several years including reductions in some legacy areas and hiring in other growing parts of the business. It’s how long lived companies evolve, thrive and survive. Good luck to all and may god bless the company!
