Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

It’s like the calm before the storm

Consider this…….. lay-off after layoff one after another….. perception =weak…..the very thing we’ve been hanging our hat on is the FIBER BUILD especially post covid when the “digital divide” is SO important post Covid……and yet everything is on HOLD…… no spending, no investment to make more revenue….nothing…… SO unless I’m missing something we’re in NO GROWTH MODE and hanging on for dear life…….. either on purpose or the Hedge Fund boys are after us again……this isn’t rocket science there is sure blood. In the water and the competition is laughing it’s a-s off as us…..

unless there are 26k subs in a city then they are not spending there, at least in our region. i think we are becoming wholesale partners and 3rd party providers. automation is nice but its mediocre at best, right now at least.

in my opinion, the companies that took CAF money to rural areas and did not deliver, should pay that money back to the states or FCC.

T-mobile 5G home internet is $30/month. AT&T fiber is $65. And I have to be home to meet a technician. At least Spectrum already has my house wired up and I can pick up the modem at my local store. And it's only $45/month. What's the value proposition for AT&T?

A well-designed SharePoint portal could easily replace 90% of middle management whose sole purpose is to aggregate/collect information from the account managers and present it to the C-suite via PowerPoint. I've seen where fixing the decrepit and stove-piped billing systems could net millions of dollars in monthly revenue, but leadership is to blind to obvious fixes and would rather simply lay-off good people to "fix" financial problems.

stank was busy trying to be a movie company while other internet providers were expanding their fiber footprint and took stank and company to the woodshed.

Which department do you work in where you have seen any level of calmness at T? This place is total chaos!

This is not true. There has been billions spent on increasing the fiber footprint as part of a multi-year strategy. Our fiber teams have been having builds done into locations that are within 1000 ft of existing fiber to bring it into buildings where it has not gone before. Our competitors cannot even come close to our footprint.
That being said, the issue I see is that the circuits being sold are nowhere near the margin of previous products. This will necessitate continued automation to increase speed to market and to reduce headcount. In other words, the product needs to go out faster and cheaper, because more has to be sold now since the margin is no longer there. Biggest competition on the wireline side is the cable companies and their existing infrastructure. Wireless on the other hand has its own problems. You can no longer go on being the "fastest" network. LTE is fast enough for most applications and everyone has it. I have my doubts as to whether narrow-band 5G will ever be a thing. Secondary carriers are on the rise due to cheaper services. The question becomes, what can AT&T do to differentiate themselves, and reduce operating expenses. The answer is clear. Less stores, lower prices, less headcount, easier online servicing and automation.
I don't say this to be a downer. I do say it because it is what makes sense and brings a realistic perspective to where we are at as a company without the background noise and incessant whining.

How can this possibly be when we're still hiring? I hate to hear this when things look so healthy in my business unit! I hope all those that are affected by layoffs land on their feet for the better!

Lay off the unneeded workers. Don't need that many workers.

You first, Dalit.

And we are gaining mobile subscribers. Go AT&T.

AT&T has lost a bunch of them. What is the ARPU for those users. I will tell you this. It has been a very long time since I saw AT&T as the customer on the wordoc when I connect a new fiber circuit. Most of them, 90% are T-Mobile. The days of selling AT&T wireless are coming to close.
