I was told that Talent Space couldn’t be shared with me, and the contents are never sent to you to confirm that you agree with what was written. They can write anything they want and you can’t see it. How is this ethical?
That's a great question. I recall, way back when Cisco was doing annual performance reviews where you had to write something up, send it to your manager, then s/he would agree or disagree, write some comments of their own, and then you had the opportunity to agree or disagree w/ their comments.
I'd been a contractor for several yrs, and finally got converted to an employee. My first mid-year review was great and then my manager quit. My year-end review came from my manager's manager because a new manager had not yet been found and I went from being great, which is why I was hired and matched my mid-year review to being in the bottom 10% "because I didn't manage projects to the manager's manager's expectations." I'm not a freaking project manager and didn't manage any projects, so yeah, I didn't mange them. But the projects I did work on were finished on-time, on- or under-budget, with no issues. The PM who was ranked in the top 10%? His project was behind schedule, cost double the planned budget, and had major issues. Maybe that's what I did wrong: I didn't fail. No, wait, it wasn't success or failure, it was the fact that the PM played golf w/ the rater and I didn't.
It didn't go over very well when I put my response on the evaluation that I was not told I was not managing projects to his expectations, especially since I didn't manage any projects at all and I ended up on a PIP the next year once a manager was found. Then the 2011 WFR came along and my PIP ended and I was let go via the WFR since that was easier than manufacturing goals that were achievable & realistic that were challenging enough for me to fail at. Luckily that management chain is now gone and I was brought back where I've been on a great team. If I wasn't getting above average IPFs and getting recognized, I'd wonder what's being written in my Talent Space comments.
