Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

MD here, this caught us all by surprise

Nobody is happy about it outside of a few MDs that were blowing the "collaboration" ho-n because apparently we get a lot of work done by the water cooler even though everyone is spread out across 17 different locations not including home. Even our CIO was against this new policy.

This was all executive council driven and there are more questions than answers. I personally feel like we have all done an amazing job supporting this firm and it's clients working mostly from home. I just wanted you all to know what a great job you all have done.

Medical accomodations are a great thing, I highly encourage peers to request an accomodation the medical route vs the “exception” route, ADA trumps all, yay for having an amazing doctor that will sign off on anything for me

"Stand up for us, gaslighting, etc."
Backbone = the literal backbone of "middle" management

I can assure you many of us are being quite vocal. I am definitely going to do what is right for my team, policy or no policy. We're going to keep this place running and take care of the clients, and that means I'm going to have to fight for exceptions and allow people to work in a way that gets the job done. If as an officer of this company I'm not trusted to do that, then you can rest assured that will be a signal to me that I need to go elsewhere. Trust IS everything. Schwab's strength is its people. Period.

Please stand up for us! Don’t roll over and give in to the collaboration gaslighting!

I'm a director and had a tough meeting with my team today. Several have moved far out of the City or are in tough situations where driving in three days a week isn't realistic. It's really tough not being able to give any direction or feedback. What's worse is knowing there's literally no reason to waste hours per week driving into an office when your team is located elsewhere. I feel like the firm has really let people leaders down.

Backbone MDs? Do you work in I&O? The worst bunch of leaders I have ever seen.

This has McKinsey or First SF all over it. Best hope is that Chuck is still around - him seeing his 50-year-old kingdom dismantled over the last two quarters won't sit well. They'll backtrack, someone on the EC will take the fall for a poorly executed pet project, apologies, free ice cream, everyone moves on.

Then say that!

Because if you just keep repeating the party line, everyone under you is just going to assume you abandoned us, and that the only way forward in this company is being a boot licking yes man.

After you admit it, fight back!

What the worst that can happen? They fire you? Losing your job with the respect of your employees has got to be better than losing the job while being silently hated by all of them. Rest assured if they don't fire you now, a company that acts like this wont have any qualms doing it in the near future.

Best case? They backpedal, and you look like a hero. That sounds like a great way to motivate your team and others.

At a healthier company that sounds like a fast track to a promotion.

Jumping in as well. Agreed. Total surprise. No input at all. We could have made this so much better and had a completely different response. I smell third party consultants at work unfortunately. It's a shame that the EC doesn't trust the backbone MDs of this firm to come up with a viable solution that gets people into the office slowly, recognizes that not all teams work the same, and there are individual needs that must be considered based on prior conversations and agreements. I have a fantastic team and I honestly feel horrible about how this was designed and communicated. I really hope that the collective feedback is rolled up and we take a truly "Schwab" approach to this. Lose the consultants. We can do better.

We need your level to stand up to the EC. Tell them what’s going on

I'm in middle management and nobody knew this was happening from our side and nobody is happy about it. I echo the sentiment above. I'm proud of all of the teams I've worked with over the past three years. You guys knocked it out of the park. Engagement was high and the vibes were good.

Nobody that I know agrees with the decision and the management meetings I've been on the last two days have been pretty miserable
