There’s always an id--t who leaves the status as “Busy” on the invite and blocks everyone’s calendars for the duration of the PTO.
I actually like it when it's done properly. I can look at my calendar in the morning and know who's OOO on my team and co-workers on other teams who I am actively working with.
Workday only shows your team so if the org is matrixed it's not helpful. Plus if you don't use Workday every day (I don't) you'd have to log in every morning specifically to check the calendar.
The OOO reply is also useful, but it's an "after I need you" response. Looking at my calendar today and seeing you are OOO tomorrow allows me to contact you before you go out vs getting the dreaded OOO reply.
I actually think this is a cool idea that might be appropriate in certain situations. Like if you have a colleague in another group that you work with regularly and can't see their PTO in Workday.

I was in tech and loved when others did it. Send it with no reply options and leaves the time free. Either accept or reject it or ignore it.

Especially if they request a response. People need Outlook training -- you can send an event WITHOUT requiring a reply.
Blame the convoluted environment and the 12 ways to track one thing. I would encourage it in my group IF people were intelligent enough to do it correctly as noted, no reminder, full day and free time. Most people can’t be bothered to setup OoO messages. Workday takes so many clicks and is terribly slow. Would make assigning out work much easier since staff are too incompetent to take work themselves.
Over 20 year here and I’ve never had anyone so that. And I don’t live under a rock as most of my days are spent in meetings of late.
Maybe I’m not important enough to get these. Thank goodness I don’t get them as it would annoy me. The people that need to know, know. All others can see a blocked calendar off for those days.

I always just blocked out the time as "out of office" and never sent it to anyone. Then added an OOO notice to my email account. Perhaps that's too simple....
I've told people to stop doing it. lot of our international colleagues do it, but please if you do it set as free and no reminder

You all must be in Audit. The only person I've ever known to have done that is now in Audit.
It's a requirement in my group.
It isnt a big deal if they send it as free time. It wont block out your calendar.
setup a shared mailbox/calendar for your team and update that
