Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Statistics

For those who are receiving the dismal news that they’re NSI, curious on the following:

  • Did you expect it?
  • What’s your age?
  • What’s your CL?
  • Are you going to PIP or PIL?

So sorry this has happened, I know it can be soul crushing. Chances are, it’s not you - it’s them. Wishing you the best of luck.

Near end of your career? Over 50 and don't really care if you move up, just want to hold job till you retire? Then you have a very high chance of being NSI or NI. Goal is to drive folks like you (me) out. Company avoids the negative stigma of layoffs and saves the unemployment consequences that come with it. Folks who are nearly retirement eligible are excellent sacrificial sheep - EM can count them in the bottom 20% but they are "protected", meaning you won't be fired but if NSI you'll get no increase either. And if you resign, they'll replace you with someone making less money. Pretty obvious what's going on here. BTW, EM, who has long prided itself and demanded integrity from its employees, is deceitful when it comes to informing new hires about this policy. They expect a potential employee to make a major decision without a key piece of information. Glad I've just got a couple of years left in this corporation, which in my opinion has sold its soul to the devil in the name of mammon and other abominations.

Ok here is the brutal truth of EM performance assessment system. If you’re over CL25 and still an individual contributor with no sponsor to protect you, odds are stacked against you because you’re now ranked with a bunch of supervisors/managers…. You could be solving the world hunger, but the company still has no business needs to rank you above average. The most likely scenario is that you won’t be even given the opportunity to make “real” impact because those special, high visibility tasks are reserved for high flyers to look good and justify the fast tracking. Smart, hard working, but apolitical individual contributors are often assigned to ticking time bo--s and work that’s so challenging, backlogged for 5+ years but has be done now due to compliance reason. When you actually defuse the bo-b in an amazing way and put a bow on it, your supervisor will graciously put you in VG, pat you on the shoulder, telling you that you did a good job but the assessment is RELEVANT and it is all about PERCEPTION so try harder next year. If you fumble, now you’re the perfect candidate to sacrifice (NI/NSI) so your supervisor could trade your NSI with another golden child’s OWD.

And yes this gets progressively worse as you are approaching 50 because EM really got you with the pension.

Is this really what you want for your career?

Assuming the same as you. NI qualifies for pip/pil for employees under 5 years of service. Figured that’s the case here.

Taking pil as NI? Aren't pil & pip for NSI only? Are you a new hire with <5 yr? Otherwise you should be safe for another year...

CL 27, Age 45
NI and did not expect it; no notification all year, more feedback that contributions were great.
Taking PIL and not looking back; next year, the ruthless rats will start eating each other because no one else is left. Woods is going to merge or sell out soon; mark my words.

Sorry to hear this happen to you. Similar situation happened to someone I know two years ago. 52 hit with a PIP, and was going to leave. He did not know about what is written below. He stayed on, passed the PIP and will retire soon with benefits. A few questions for you.

How long do you have with EM? If you are 52 and have the chance of getting a minimum15 years by age 55, take the PIP, pass it, and stay for the benefits when you can retire at 55. Once you hit 52 and can get 15 years of service (or more) they will not fail you on your PIP. Your SLS should have explained this to you, but there's a whole crew of SLSs that are incompetent.

Was told all year I was doing great, volunteered for work during storms and equipment failures even in other areas, told I was appreciated
Then NSI out of nowhere

Interviewing at many other companies, looks promising at a few places. Looks like a lot of places are hiring and can’t get people.
Goodbye Exxon
NSI was actually a relief, now I don’t have to deal with this place and wonder when my 1 year contract will not be renewed

The rank pools in many groups are CL 22-27. If you are CL 26-27 and over 45 you’re basically done. There’s no more advancement and because youre high CL, you’re expected to do more than lower CLs it’s impossible to get a good ranking.

The company has turned in to a complete age discrimination monster. I bet everyone who replies to this post is late 40s or mid 50s. Meanwhile, the young new kids are doing courses after long haul flights to EMHC or India.
