Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

LET'S DO IT!

US Sen. Edward Markey D-Mass leading a Federal Investigation with
AT&T facing total cost clean up,
pressuring telcos to identify all the cables and address any potential environmental and health problems, industry's lack of action "corporate irresponsibility of the worst kind."

New Street Research estimated that remediation could cost the telecom industry $60 billion, according to a Telecompetitor article. AT&T has the biggest network of legacy telephone cables and could thus face the biggest costs, as the companies will face class-action lawsuits and lawsuits from attorneys general.

As for lead bullets, some states are already requiring steel shot, which hunters hate because it wears out shot g-n barrels.

Oil companies stopped selling leaded gasoline for cars in 1974 by government mandate. Tetra-ethyl lead was put into gasoline as an anti-knock compound (Hence the saying "Fill 'er up with ethyl"). There is still some leaded gas in use as aviation fuel for small planes like Pipers and Cessnas. As for lead shielding on cables, there will probably be a gov't program down the road to remove it. Just like there is a program in place today to get rid of lead water lines.

Apparently AT&T DOES NOT WANT TO COMPLY with the 2021 agreement to remove lead-clad telecommunications cables from Lake Tahoe, as it have submitted a court filing.

Shooting themselves in the foot.

which straddles California and Nevada, to resolve a lawsuit despite AT'S&T belief that they pose no danger.

The Better business bureau complaints speak for themselves. AT&T is not well respected by consumers. They may need to pay compensation to employees and average citizens affected by lead cable exposure. It may be expensive also.

These cables have been around for 80+ years.

The risks of lead have actually been understood since the Roman empire, but let's be generous and say just 50 years.

50 years, a good chunk of which was tightly regulated. I am all but certain that at least one PUC meeting tacitly said "keep the cables and keep rates low" as opposed to "replace the lead cables and subscribers will pay a bit more." (P.S. downvotes here are from mo--ns)

Ed Markey has been floating around for 50 years too. And he is just now puffing his chest? He had plenty of chances to do so since the 70s; don't believe for one second he is the good guy.

Just my two cents worth. John Stankey lacks the “like ability” factor. He’s despised by the workforce he is charged with leading. No one works for anyone else. They work with or against them. That’s common sense and he has none. He is an egotistical zealot who never had his hand on the pulse of his workforce….the very ones he needed to right the ship after all the bad decisions made by Randy, JS and the BOD. Instead of showing a little humility and trying to rally the troops, what did he do?? Sc--w people he expected to give their all out of vacation days, erode benefits, micromanage, impose RTO and hub…I could go on. All while he lines his pockets. I have no issue with his huge salary but by God, I earn every penny of mine and my measurable results demonstrate that. I just expect him to earn his. Now he finds himself on the ropes. Stock price in the can, lead cable dilemma, horrible press, nothing productive getting accomplished. Will you dig in and help fix things or will you phone it in and do the minimal to keep a paycheck? Will you turn the other cheek or tell him to kiss your a-s? I don’t want to feel like I’ve wasted all these years on a career at a failed corporation. Im not sure how I’ll play this. What you gonna do???

We live in an era of massively large jury awards, Mega lawsuits that can result in Unbounded Liability.
Hundred of millions of dollars worth of legal fees, not counting remediation costs in the ten of billions plus cable removal expenditures.

Funny, they didn’t seem to care about all the cars using leading gasoline until the 90’s. I’m sure plenty of lead leached into the ground from that. Guess they are going to have to ban lead bullets, too.

It's huge! Just like the Big Tobacco case declared in May 1994 by Mississippi Attorney General Mike Moore. The general theory of these lawsuits was that the cigarettes produced by the tobacco industry contributed to health problems among the population, which in turn resulted in significant costs to the states' public health

AT&T IS NEXT!

I can't wait to see this company get what's coming to it. It's going to be a hoot to watch all the snakes and insects come crawling out from under the rock.

AT&T, you are simply the worst.
