Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Is my salary fair?

I am a Geoscientist with 11 years experience, CL-27, joined as an external hire, so I will never move up. Okay with that but want to make sure I am being compensated fairly.

I’m at 206,000. Is this fair? What should I expect to make with 15,20,25 years experience? All contingent that I even make it

In the old system you would have got to +300K by the time you had 25 years with the company. In the new system, post 2020, you will never get to even 20 years with the company. Your job is strictly temporary, will disappear as soon as it feasible to move it to Bangalore.

Overpaid, we can get 4 people for that amount outside of the US

If you think you’re underpaid go elsewhere

It's probably about right given your experience and current reduced demand for Geos. We really don't do exploration work anymore.

I'd say that's pretty good for someone who doesn't have to deal with operations or be responsible for the safety of others.

Seems like a decent salary for a generic 'geoscientist'.
My geology PhD attracted little interest just a 10 years ago.
So I stuck with academia.
Published a few papers on Lithium Brine.
Hot property now.
(can't disclose salar-y).

Of course, working for EM, I also imbibe a little lithium myself on a regular basis.

Folks here think they know how experienced hires are treated or have been treated in the past. That all may be true, but there's one thing they have just recently forgot or don't want to admit... outside, experienced hires have been hired the past couple years for high level executive positions and been immediately given outrageous compensation. That's right, these positions were never filled by outsiders in the past. So that means that internal, hi-pos, on the fast track to executives were completely skipped over and they purposely looked for outsiders. So all past history of what was and what is doesn't mean anything anymore. This is a completely different company than what was and no one can deny that.

Since the company offered the salary and you accepted it, by definition it is a fair salary, guess I have to explain it to you since you are a geoscientist. You are free to seek employment anywhere else at anytime so why are you asking this question? Apparently Exxon is paying you more than your previous employer or you wouldn’t have left (unless of course if you really are not very smart).

There are thousands of geoscientists willing to take your job for less money so if you think your pay is fair, you should go. We won’t miss you.

You are tagged with the “experienced hire” which means you are not one of us. Expect a 2% raise for an outstanding with distinction ranking, so you would be at about $330k in 25 years at age 64. Not bad for a geoscience PhD. Unfortunately you will be NSI within 2 years since your job has already been moved overseas where someone will do the job for $15K/year. True that they will not do as well a job and it may take three to do the job, but still less expensive. Remember, it’s not personal, just business.

Geo goes through cycles. Not sure if there will be a demand long term if oil and gas demand goes away. Go for job satisfaction and other metrics. Better to work reasonable hours with less stress. Save your money so you can retire early.

Previous comments about experienced hire pay is correct. They will lure you in with a big salary bump. Then salary and advancement stagnate. Upward mobility is limited.

A high level manager told a group of experienced hires point blank not to expect promotion to exec levels as these jobs are not for them. Outside hires will be compensated well as long as they deliver. The smart ones resigned from company soon after upon hearing this. Experienced hires will always be an outsider.

I get paid with leftover biscuits and promises in my department. Don't you breathe too much air or we're docking your pay!

Similar experience geoscientist here, making 35k above that. The 15-20 years guys are making 270-290. From what I've seen pay greatly varies for geos. Experienced hires get screwed.

Usually Exxon puts experienced hire slightly below the salary curve mid point. Based on how your performance over next few years you will either catch up (if rated outstanding or excellent), keep pace (for very good) or slow down even more (if good or needs improvement)..

Never stop looking is the answer. Stay on your terms. Hope it helps.
