Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Contract work

You think AT&T is pushing out all in house labor/craft in favor of cheap contract labor like all the rest of these fiber start ups?

There’s tons of management jobs that can be outsourced but VPs holding on to have “territory”
I’m talking non-union management lower level jobs that can be outsourced for much less.
Why the focus only on union employees?
I think bc some execs don’t want their group to get too small. Selfish motivations.

The company will avoid declaring non management surplus to keep from having to pay the large payouts under current CWA contracts. They will let attrition take care of as many head count as possible. I see non management sitting around playing video games, doing online shopping, personal business….there’s not much work going on. These are high wage scale techs. They’ve had a gravy train for far too long.

The lead cable “scandal” is the perfect opportunity for the company to have the government say it’s ok to get out of copper.

“We don’t have a lot of lead cable, but it is predominantly used in F1 feeder. Ok government we’ll get rid of ASAP.”

“Sorry customer the government is forcing us to suspend your services for health concerns.”

You can downvote all you want, but any one can tell you the work load is way down for the field.
As an example the contract for SW is up and there are already talks of needing to GREATLY reduce headcount. The company is reducing copper utilization and ATT Air Internet is being trialed with full roll out beginning 1/1/24. This will include forced migration of DSL & VDSL customers.
Fiber will be outsourced to Gigapower which are not AT&T employees.

This is the beginning of the end.

Oh it’s happening and it’s starting in 2024.

They (Gigapower) will offer to absorb part of the work force. And just like any other time a part of the company is eliminated you have a choice to move with the work.

Choose not to move to Gigapower and consider your position eliminated and that you turned down the offer to follow the work.

Move with Gigapower and understand your contract may or may not be worth the paper it was written on.

Once Gigapower is moving along the company will shift to using that workforce to install and maintain fiber.

All wireline services at “ATT “ will cease. Gigapower (non-union) will be the new provider for fiber for the new AT&T Wireless Company.

And just like that the company will have under 80,000 employees.

Absolutely, what do you think Gigapower is? They literally lifted and shifted a bunch of AT&T management to run that show. You'd be a fool if you think they are going to rope in union labor on that project.

Yes! Craft because they are union and T can’t get rid of them as easy as managers. Managers, because they can control their wages and headcount.
