Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Leave on your own terms

My opinion/advice: if you feel vulnerable to what is happening, starts looking and interviewing for outside positions. As a former manager, I saw the writing on the wall in November. I got to work on networking and found a position externally I had a referral for. It look several months. I went to a true tech company and couldn’t be more pleased. They treat employees with respect and want you to be happy and make money. They also have “hubs” but do not force attendance. They built these as state of the art with free lunch, gourmet coffee, snacks and activities. They want you to want come in to collaborate, not necessarily do your daily work. The grass can be greener, but take action soon before it’s too late.

This could not be any more true. So much incenstual hiring practices at att it is disgusting. so many nicer and normal companies to work for and they actually like you and respect you.

OP,

Goggle, the employer it appears recently hired you did something worse than even AT&T layoffs. Recently alot of their employees reported to work like normal only to find out their badges were turned off, no building access and access to their company laptops was turned off too. They were blind-sided and couldn’t even access their personal belongs at the office until weeks later. No one gave them a call, email or heads-up it they were about to be laid off. Goggle used a company that has an algorithm to decide who would be let go. Grass always appears greener but you never know when that snake in the grass will get you!

Agreed. Even if it means walking away from severance. The job market is so bad right now with almost 200,000+ other unemployed workers competing. So you get to not work for however many months while COBRA takes a huge chunk out of that severance. It will take 2-3 months to even schedule interviews. It will take another 1-2 months to get the interviews and then wait to hear back. The likelihood is there is someone else who is currently employed and looks like a better candidate than you and you will continue to be unemployed for the next 6-9 months. So now was that severance worth it?

Finding a job while you have a job is the best option.

Almost agree with this, except for some of us "their terms" includes severance (an incentive to leave).

Don't walk away from severance and decide after Aug 15 (if you're first wave) that you want to leave "on your own terms. " (This applies only if you are being called back from TW)

Thank you for the positive, uplifting post. Many of us are holding on to this belief that our lives will be better away from T. We’re just holding out for that severance. Your encouragement is very thoughtful and kind. God bless you!
