Unused vacation time what happens if SIRPd

Question on unused vacation time or yet to use vacation time when you get SIRPd. Do you lose it or do they pay you for the days unused. Prepping for eventuality

You get accrued, unused vacation time. Of course, that all depends on how your supervisor (if still there themselves) or his boss handle it. I had taken no time, I emailed my boss' boss (my boss had also been let go), and told him I had taken no vacation time, he responded that he had out in 0 days taken for me. I got paid for all accrued vacation time.

However, a coworker had purchased vacation time. He got paid for accrued unused vacation but not for purchased vacation. Dirty rotten snakes.

I was SIRP’ed last year, too. My experience is it is variable not only how much you get of your unused bill to if you get it at all.

First you have to remember vacation is technically earned through out the year. Almost no supervisor or LL5 pays much attention to that rule, which is why you can take two weeks off in Jan or Feb if you want - however unless you purchased extra vacation time, technically you have not earned ‘enough’ vacation time. Reason I mention this is when I was let go last April, I had already used two weeks vacation, so I did not get any un- used vacation cause technically I had used more than I had earned.

In some cases, you will have a LL6 or LL5 do you a favor a claim no vacation time used to get someone a little extra money; I’ve known other cases where people have list out on a few hundred dollars. Like most things at Ford, highly variable unfortunately…

I had bought 2 weeks of vacation. Lost it all last August.

SIRP'd in August and my supervisor way over reported how many vacation days I had left. I ended up getting a lot more money than I should have, but I'm sure that was his way of making the situation feel a little better for me. In the end it's your supervisor that reports how much vacation you had left.

They will pay you out for the unused vacation time that is allotted to you.

Your people leader will tell HR how many vacation days you used before being SIRP'd and you'll receive the value of the remainder (that are vested).

There is one catch... When I was SIRP'd last August, there was a specific bullet point that said Ford will not repay any money spent to purchase additional vacation time. You know how some people will request and receive approval from their people leader to purchase additional vacation time for the year? It is a formal process during annual enrollment. Then those funds are deducted from each paycheck.

Well....

It essentially said something about what is required by law. I am paraphrasing. But what I took away was 'they won't refund that money because they don't legally have to'. I thought it was horrible that they did that to people.

It was a lose-lose for employees. You don't finish paying for the extra vacation time until about October (when your vacation time is fully vested). And if you use more vacation days than are vested - and then get SIRP'd, the company deducts that value from your final paycheck. Even if you were also buying extra vacation time. It is potentially a double dip for Ford.

So, if the separation happens before October, there is no way to accrue your full vacation time - plus the additional time you paid for - and use it all.

Say you only used what was accrued through September, and had planned to use the purchased days in December. You get SIRP'd, you don't own any money because you only used what was accrued - but you dont get the money back that you spent to buy the additional days.

Say you received approval to buy extra time per the process. And say you used all of your vacation days - allotted plus additional purchased. Get SIRP'd before October, the company claws back the value of the days that weren't accrued. That might be the best scenario lol. At least you got the days off that you paid for : )

Worst case scenario, you use more vacation days than were vested - but none of the 'purchased' days. Get SIRP'd before October, Ford claws back the used days that weren't vested AND keeps the money you paid to buy the additional days.

Sorry for the rambling post. I wasn't even impacted by this when SIRP'd because I never bought extra vacation days. But this one really upset me. If they have the process and system in place to deduct money from our paychecks to claw back un vested vacation days - then they can darn well repay us the money we spent for additional vacation days that went unused. They simply choose not to because the law does not force them to. So much for Ford 'family'.

They will pay you out on it, no worries.
