Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Remote Work, RTO and Layoffs

Remote work is now a big part of the future, the pandemic put it on the fast track. The big issue is it happened so fast, large parts of the economy weren’t and aren’t yet prepared for such a large shift so quickly. Communications is one part of the economy that is ready to support remote work in many areas of the country due to the availability of faster internet speeds, cellphones/VoIP and remote software, ie.. Zoom, Teams, etc.. There was a huge focus during the pandemic to upgrade comm. transportation and facilities infrastructure for remote workers, still a ways to go.

Currently, RTO is being implemented by a lot companies across the country, it is due too so many employees going virtual during the pandemic. Virtual at this much larger scale is negatively impacting the economy at the fed, state and local levels and in nearly all downtown businesses and commercial spaces.

It’s impacting both Wall and Main Streets, examples; REITs, all the vacant buildings, loss of property values, building leases not being resigned, it has or will happen soon if a large % of pandemic employees don’t RTO. It is impacting all forms of transportation, parking fees, restaurants, gas stations, retail, child care, lodging, entertainment, conference spaces, service and hospitality, local mom & pop, tax revenues, etc… The wealthy and large investors are pulling all the levers to get medium/large companies and government officials to force RTO, you are naive if you believe otherwise, Money talks!

AT&T CEO Stanky’s twist on RTO, is to report to a specific hub that requires a large % of virtual employees to make a decision to quit/retire or relocate. It’s a clumsy and thinly veiled layoff plan as everybody knows. Even if you decide to follow the work, there are no guarantees how long you will continue to have that position or be forced to move again. It’s happened before to employees, on a smaller scale. Once leadership gets to their headcount number, look for things to become more relaxed, at least until the next crisis.

Not news but Layoffs, AI and outsourcing to contractors is the company’s plan going forward and that isn’t guaranteed either. Basically employment becomes gig work without the benefits, you are only employed for the project or duration of a contract and they change contractors constantly. Contracting out to the lowest bid, this path leads to the loss of the Middle Class in America and benefits, maybe you got your’s already but what about your kids and grandkids? There needs to be an update of US labor/wage laws and regs for the future due to no consequences for corporate elite, AI, contracting and outsourcing across the country.

Good luck to all and may you prayerfully make the best decision for you and your family!

I think AT&T should outsource engineering to T-mobile and sales and marketing to VZ and close all the offices and layoff everyone
That time only the company will start making money and handle the debt issue much better

You are so lazy and you keep complaining about anything
You are lucky that you work for AT&T
In any other company you won’t last a week

Dude!
All the big tech in the Silicon Valley from Apple and google and Microsoft and nvidia and Intel and meta are bringing all employees back to the office
Tech enovation can’t be done while working remotely
Keeping T employees work from home the the thing that will end T and bring it to its knees
Every one should report from the office 40 hours a week or else this company is totally doomed

"WFH was a temporary inconvenience needed for businesses to get past the pandemic , it was never meant to be permanent. Lets cut the sht, these companies paying six figures want to control your time and what better way than mandating RTO , the last thing they want is you moonlighting or paying you while you work for someone else.."

Hey, a-s//h/o///,,l..e. I was WFH long BEFORE the pandemic. Do not be mad that your skills are inadequate to warrant you the same status.

“ Don’t have to worry about AI or losing your WFH job if you learned a trade. A lot of kids and schools are now figuring that out after all the nearly bankrupt college millennials who were sold a bill of goods, cannot make ends meet or pay their loans. AI can’t replace Telecomm Tech, Engineers, Electrician, AC tech, Plumber, Pipe Fitter, Carpenter, Construction, Welder, Metal Worker, Machine Operators, Auto/Air Mechanics, CAD Operators, Home Renovations, Elevator Tech, Medical Field, etc.. you can work your way up to management and eventually have your own business in those fields too.”

Yep agree with your post; however, I’ll point something out. When I was young and coming up pre collage I worked trades for a few years learned a lot and was doing things way above my pay level, here’s the thing, back then places put all kinds of roadblocks in your way to move to the actual tech level, had to have a piece of paper for the young guys to get above helper status, none of the old guys had those certificates but for some reason back in the late 90’s early 00’s, you weren’t moving from helper status without a piece of paper. So I said to my boss, if I go back to school, it’s not going to be for this, so I got an engineering degree instead.

All that said, not surprising any Millennials with any gumption went to college instead. Those would have been your excellent master trade people now, funny how we really lack really quality trades people now as a result. But, the pendulum has swung back and now if you are willing able and show up, they pay big bucks at these trades. I’m seriously considering going that direction and starting over in my 40s.

“50 to 70 percrent of the workforce will be receiving some sort of assistance in the future from the goverment ie stimulus checks“

Wrong. The government is broke. It is saddled with $30 Trillion in debt and $170 Trillion in unfunded liabilities. You are not going to own anything, and you will like it. You will work where they tell you to. You will buy what they tell you to. You will behave like they tell you to, or your CBDC account will be cut off and you will be restricted. Welcome to Chinamerica.

Some people can’t see the forest because they are only looking at the trees in front of them. Of course communities have been affected by virtual work due to the pandemic.

Nonsensical post.

It is in no way bad for the economy. It is bad for certain entrenched players in certani locations but that's how economies work.

Randolph and Mortimer want to turn the machines back on. Sorry.

I’m sure there places even in NJ where you can’t get fast or reliable service, I live in a Large metro area and there are still alot of neighborhoods can only get dsl speeds or less.

In NJ, we have this stuff called ‘internets’, sold by a company called Verizon. You can use this internets stuff to use computers to check emails, send work files and have meetings. Oh, and you can get it in your home now. Maybe in a few years TX will have Verizon internet and you can work from home too.

To poster “1kyl+1nYHfvxo”…

You’re spot on regarding the benefits of learning a “blue collar” trade. Most liberal arts college degrees aren’t worth the paper they’re written upon. Especially for young men, learning a trade is a solid route.

Going to be a hardship in this country when the Boomers and GenX retire because they were the last generations taught shop (trade) classes in school and learned at home from family and peers, then went to various trade or apprenticeship schools on a large scale.

There is a serious shortage of skilled tradesmen now but it will be astronomical in 10 years or less. You will have to purchase another, repair or work on things yourself because the wait for someone skilled will be very long if not ever.

Why is the current administration requiring govt employees and I’m sure big business to RTO, he has worked from his basement for a very long time. Definitely doesn’t collaborate, barely does any interviews, what kind of leader is he?

We need some younger than 70 or have held a job the last 10 years to be in office, most are so out of touch with labor and common household issues, it’s criminal. Only way to solve some of these issues is to get term and age limits for our officials so they can empathize with the working person and kids just starting out in their careers.

AI is taking your job unless you work out in the field. Work from home was a stress test on the economy to see if it can pay people to live at home while AI is working for corporations. 50 to 70 percrent of the workforce will be receiving some sort of assistance in the future from the goverment ie stimulus checks because AI is taking over average jobs for the average person. Getty ready for it folks enhance your skills or get government handouts. Your choice.

Zoom is now asking their employees to RTO, isn’t that funny? It’s happening everywhere for different reasons but Big money and government definitely has a hand in it too.

Most employees only see it from their prospective, not all the other factors that a company has to deal with like training, leases, taxes, etc…

The wholesale relocation plan is a different issue.
