Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

KLTC MPE

I stumble upon this from our Singapore peers. What do you all think ?

“Over the past few years, I must say the standards of KLTC technical support have deteriorated significantly. Several years ago when the supporting engineers were still called PMA, I had encountered a few good ones who were actually able to step in and support the units when site PE were leaving in hordes. Now, the MPEs ( think this is the 3rd change in name?) are so incompetent that they are adding on to the workload of site PEs. MPEs are supposed to be the one monitoring the unit and providing long term optimisation ideas but somehow it ends up that the process engineers have to provide those data to the KLTC engineers. Offshoring is inevitable but at least ensure the standard of the technology center first”

I agree that KLTC MPEs are a net drain on site engineering resources. I have many examples of their creating more work and very few of them offloading me and my peers. It's unfortunate because many are eager to help but it just doesn't work to support a manufacturing site from a desk in Malaysia, even after extensive training and site visits. The worst part is when we bring them to backfill people in the states. They can do ok but the site will never get that year and a half of competency growth back. And the MPEs go home and get a better job.

Sounds similar to IT. Outsource and offshore the work only for it to come
back in terms of needing support and expertise that has not available capacity.

Clearly, it's the hiring criteria and pay rates that have declined - intentionally by the company simply for some dividend savings.

It is certainly not the fault of those people hired into these positions. It seems like a good opportunity for them.

Just to be clear - there is no one among these hires that wants to do a poor job. But, they are probably not given the training and tools in any case.

The CEOs of ExxonMobil from the past were competent, trained and consistent.
But look at the CEO we got now.

Since according to upper management outsourcing is working that well, why don't they just fire and outsource themselves?
