Young people in their 20s and to some extent 30s who are not married and who mostly rent can pick up and leave whenever they want. Most of us who are 40+ don't have that luxury. Don't even get me started about people in their 50s and 60s. This isn't just a disguised layoff, as some have already figured out, but also a disguised way to get rid of as many people over 40 as possible. Hopefully, there'll be a class action lawsuit over this sometime in the future.

I requested surplus to get a package. Was told I was too valuable. So now a great employee who isn’t ready to go will be cut. It sucks.
I am a old guy and I have too much valuable experience. They won't let me go. Discriminate that!

LONG term career plans at AT&T
A relatively short 75 years from now, this will all have sorted itself out. I've heard nary a complaint from the deceased, it's the living who moan and whimper and endlessly complain.
Storm in a teacup, old chap. Now, keep a stiff upper lip and carry on.
I’m in my 50s and would have no issues with moving. I just have no desire to live in Dallas or Atlanta. I’d rather move someplace I want to retire. Who wants to move now and then again in 7ish years.
How often are we going to post the same thing?
I mean, you're right, but it's getting a bit tired.
No, but we all said nothing and decided to stay at our homes without putting any additional locks on the doors or windows. This was a clear signal more could be taken and we would be okay with it for different reasons.
"AT&T took nothing away. You chose to give up these benefits by staying on."
Is this the logic? The thief stole nothing. You chose to be robbed by living in your house.
The board and senior leadership team bankrupted our company after repeatedly ignoring our core business - telco. The only thing left to steal is our wages and benefits. The ‘layer’ of ageism is a bell shaped curve. Most of the employees at AT&T are 50+ age and 25+ years of service. They took away our vacations, retirement perks and now the final blow is our jobs. Fire the old people who built AT&T, hire young people in Dallas and give the board and senior leadership team a huge bonus for trampling on the folks built telco.
International employees are offered pensions. The company isn’t stopping or eliminating the pension benefits. There is no claim when it comes to “Pension” because nothing has changed, except rates.
Age discrimination ~ It’s hard to prove. From my perspective it seems more like a way to destroy evidence. Employees do what they are told in fear of insubordination. I would be interested to know how many employees did something they knew was illegal and did it anyway because their boss told them to do it or threatened them with insubordination. The compliance hotline is a 3rd party company that doesn’t have a clue about Federal & state laws. They fill out a form and close the case sending a no findings email in 24 hours. There’s no connecting the dots, it’s closed. That company should be audited so all the complaints are lined up to establish trends within operating companies. It’s not unanimous, it goes right back to your leadership. At some point you just do what you’re told & look the other way. You are labeled as difficult & mark making it difficult to get promoted. The company wants employees that do what they are told without questioning it. The longer you are with the company, the smarter you are & less likely to go along with fraudulent behavior’s. Gen Z seems to have a different perspective, they will do whatever to get ahead because they are naive enough to be conditioned that it’s all good because they have been beefed up with authority. Unfortunately, they don’t know historical arrests of employees who actually got caught. At some point AT&T will get nabbed for all the crimes they are committing for the sake of a sale. Oh and don’t count on the FCC to help, anyone who sees something should call the FBI before compliance. Don’t count on your union either, they all work together to get paid & look the other way. Don’t confide in your coworkers because they are looking to get ahead or keep their boss on their good side. The difference between prison & working for AT&T is, how well it’s organized. Coaching opportunities are warnings if you don’t sell it, you must go. You’re not good enough. They don’t respect nor accept a consumer decline “ add it anyway, they can always remove it later. AT&T next up, protection plans, adding calling plans with commitment terms justifying illegal acts doesn’t make it wrong. It just means the customer doesn’t know what they want. Every time I go into a retail store for help or call into the call center my bill always has additional features I never requested nor ordered. Even their online system is rigged to give it all regardless of clicking decline. It’s just lie after lie covering up more lies. It’s pointless to vent because every decision, every change has NEVER been nor will EVER be for our employees or customers. It’s never been their MO.
The benefits to this are numerous for the company
Lump sum payouts are way down right now.
Headcount reduction
Tax incentives by Atlanta and Dallas.
Consolidation of real estate occupancy.
Utility cost reduction.
In person innovation and collaboration
Company is not age discriminating if you live in Atlanta and Dallas.
Gotta make better excuses.
Most people over 40 maybe have pension benefit company is paying into every month. Another reason for Company to target more experienced employees.
Proof or speculation?

Needs of the.business changed. Stop making the position changes at T so personal. Go out there and explore new opportunities if it comes to that.
Agreed. The company holds itself up as ethical and doing the right thing. But the sustain for older employees shows through the companies actions and even some posters on this site. Horrifying. 40+ age worked is a federally protected class. Brought on by historic corporate agism.
The laws enforced by EEOC protect you from employment discrimination when it involves:
Unfair treatment because of your race, color, religion, s-x (including pregnancy, gender identity, and se-ual orientation), national origin, disability, age (age 40 or older), or genetic information.
