Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

FYI

About 30% of this company is going to be gone by the end of the year. Act accordingly.

Don’t sit around with your head in your hands. Get your ducks in a row NOW: LinkedIn, your CV, network and start taking calls.

The people writing that people like me who write this are propagating a conspiracy or that this is somehow a ruse to get you to quit now and forgo severance clearly do NOT understand the current job market. (Which makes sense since, in fairness to them: they’re probably Craft and have only worked at T.)

I’m telling you right now as someone working in human capital unless you’re looking for entry-level work it will take you MONTHS to find another job and to get to offer. (Again: an entry level customer service or $20/hr job isn’t applicable here). By the time you get your LinkedIN up and going, get a good resume in order, start applying for work via LinkedIN, Indeed, etc, a lot of time will have gone by. The online job application in of itself is a hellscape. Just so laborious. Applying for one job can take hours. And you’ll need to apply to lots of them: hundreds if you’re smart.

Then if you make it past the AI, there will be calls (after the bot emails.) And then more calls. And yet more calls and then maybe some zoom interviews.

Then and only then if the company in question decides to move forward will you be flown in for in person interviews. Then there will be more waiting. And yet more. Then they’ll need to run your background check and go back and make sure everyone is still bought in to hiring you. Then you’ll get an offer. (If it all goes well.)

Be PROACTIVE now and don’t sit around.

If you’re smart you’ll be able to time this to where you can have an offer and a stave off the start date to where you can have a new job lined up AND get the severance. My husband has done this before: lined our pockets with 6 months of pay, took a two week vacay, then started the new job. It can be done.

Waiting around until everyone is in the same situation you are in is NOT a smart move.

Work the system. Start now.

"About 30% of this company is going to be gone by the end of the year."

Unless you got proof, I didn't read past the first sentence.

Good points and post.

A couple of other things. Make sure you take opportunities to refresh your skills. Whether it be tech skills or project management skills, be sure to take refresher courses. I can't speak to non-tech roles, but anything involving tech or product/project/program management may involve separate technical/specific interviews in which you will be expected to demonstrate your knowledge. Depending on the position, you may have more than one type of these interviews. Even if it is stuff that you know, if you don't brush up you may be caught off guard. It would stink to get into the interview process and then bo-b. If you are interested in specific companies, then research their interview process.

Thanks for the heads up Santone. Thinking about it, do you still work at T? I have heard anything from you in months. It seems that JS has silenced you and Jeff.

@qeq+1neYRvA6: OP here. Yes! ! This is the way to work it! This is an awful situation but the best thing you can do is be proactive and play this game to your advantage. My husband I look back now on when he did this (got the severance AND the new job aligned at the same time) and although it was stressful, moving on (albeit it was not his choice at the beginning) has brought nothing but great things our way. I’m so sorry for anyone who’s going to be affected by this, but you can turn this chicken sh*t of a situation into chicken salad! Best of luck to you and sending positive energy your way!

I am doing this now too. Hoping I can get the right timing to get severance and then start the new job!
