Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

No more WFH for Remote before pandemic

I was just informed that my status as permanent remote will be revoked in a couple months. I was pushed into remote work during the big "Workplace 2020" migration in 2018. This is not just me but the entire department. Also, remote workers who are not in the hub cities for my department will be laid off by end of 2024 unless they get an approved exception. Anyone else in this situation?

I have a work from home exception and was laid off today. It was issued in march too.

Soon they will have to offshore the bank to find customers. I hope opening branches in India and the Philippines are on their radar. I only want to do business with those that hire locally. I don’t want my personal information offshored and have a higher risk of fraud.

I'm the OP. This is in a compliance role in the COO division. What's seems crazy is half my group would be subject to termination by next year. I realize any job could be offshored but we do fairly specialized work that requires experience and knowledge of regulatory requirements. But apparently RTO takes precedent over skills here.

Location strategy was in play prior to pandemic.
Location strategy =

  1. reduce physical footprint (fewer locations),
  2. each LOB can pick what locations they will/won't staff in (this discretion exists at the OC+1 level)
  3. eliminate fully remote workers.

Pandemic halted it temporarily, but the underlying strategy never went away.

When I was hired into this position, as soon as some on-site training/orientation was done, they told me I never needed to come into the office. They even had a signed and filed telecommuting agreement. That manager said I could move anywhere in the US.

Fast forward to that manager leaving and us getting new executive management. At first, they had my manager asking me, "Hey can you find your telecommuting agreement?". That lasted about 18 months, then it was "all telecommuting agreements are null and void." Third was Location Strategy.

They didn't even try once to force me into the office. It was all weak coercion to quit.

When the pandemic hit, it became, "Don't worry about it. It's not an issue anymore."

Up until recently, RTO didn't apply to our group. It has taken 4 years of this wishy-washy garbage until I finally learned that I'm outside of the magical 40-mile hub/office requirement for my area.

I keep waiting to see if I'm in any of these rumored rounds of layoffs. It would be great for me. I could go back to school full-time since I've worked here for quite a while. Wells would gift me the ability to chart an entirely new path if they laid me off.

Yet here I am, far outside the professed guidelines. I keep surviving every round of layoffs like a f'n ro--h.

Don't try to think you know what's going on here. The people who know what's going on here don't know what's going on here. The people who decide what's going on here don't know what's going on here.

Of course, they revoke these work from home agreements that were from pre-pandemic at this time of year . they are counting on employees who work from home to be forced to either quit, be fired for noncompliance, or PIP’d out. they chose to do it during summertime because they know it would affect those people with children home from school for the summer. in my opinion, this is another cost cutting exercise and more proof that they could care less about being better together, and are more focused on making US domestic employees lives miserable so they can offshore as many jobs as possible. This is their strategy and Only strategy.and unfortunately the facts.

It is beyond pathetic that Wells Fargo’s BOD or agency has yet to hold CS accountable for any of his many failures. Everything he has done so far has either been incomplete, or a failure/fine. I guess it comes with his territory. Just look at his past! he was laughed out of his previous role as CEO by trying to pull the same return to office nonsense, and that was 10 years ago. just another example of how out of touch she is with technology and creating any efficient and effective work environment. ” somebody. Putem in the bathroom”. This guy is a joke.

It isn't just the remote workers. It's all domestic workers.

I left due to being assigned to a location over an hour from my home, despite there being an office in this hub 25 mins from my home. They’re doing it on purpose.
Most interestingly, I hear on regular basis from recruiters hiring for fully remote teams. All within the risk organization. Shame on them and the multiple layers of entitlements in place.

Have been told in no uncertain terms by a senior exec vp that the end game is to get rid of all remote workers, and they have different ways to do that. The hub strategy is just one. So if you are remote, your days are numbered.

one team member granted medical need to work from home.....disability being anxiety from what I heard and I bet it's very possible their mgmt. team will honor that agreement. so, is RTO a cherry pick type of requirement? I will literally fall off my chair if this person gets displaced--because WF would not honor a team member request to WFH that is a paraplegic!!-- person unable to open the suite doors let alone the restroom.

If WF plans to do a dirty and change the severance plan to stick it to remote workers outside of hubs, they sure better wait until they get the “all is well and good on your risks & controls” from regulators post all RCSA completion OR things WILL get ugly…

I see far MORE risks the bank is taking NOW (during RCSA fix all shops) than ever before. So many are engaged in RCSA that no one is paying true attention to the colossal mess of issue management. Things are getting closed that are not fixed. Others are circumventing issue management and not putting in additional or enhanced controls. Or doing actions that don’t come close to solving the actual problem.

Someone needs to take a peek at issue management that is connected to our friends in India and Philippines. Absolute disaster!

I am full time remote w/ a medical issue exception that isn't considered a formal disability. I am just waiting for the cut to come... every week I wonder when that axe will fall.
Our team is spread out all over the US & India. We have people going into the office where there is NO ONE there...and no one from our team ever WILL be there... so the RTO for us is a complete and utter joke and massive waste of people's time.
They don't care about the work-life balance for anyone who isn't an executive. Making people waste 1+ hour a day to commute to a building that is essentially empty to "collaborate" with your team members via Teams is absolutely asinine.
The last 5 years this place has gone downhill SO much its really sad. But I'm also assuming most other large companies are the same anymore. World is going to sh--e quickly

Yep, the slow moving disaster that is RTO / location strategy continues. It's all about abusing employees and CRE. The CFO himself said there hasn't been 'enough' attrition. This is how they will drive it, but it's not the last step. Once they've gotten rid of all the remote people, then they will start consolidating teams geographically, so you might be in a hub, but it's not the "right" hub according to some random paper pushing HR team. And, of course, the final nail in the coffin will be shutting down hubs, one by one, until Hudson Yards and Hyderabad are the only ones left.

We're all getting fired. Just a matter of time.

I was fully remote prior to my current position. I found a new role in a different department and specifically said that I need to work in one of the suburban offices or I will not accept the role. The location was on my offer letter. Since RTO was coming back I was fine since the office is so close.
Now this group is trying to get everyone back into the downtown offices and was told ‘the HR recruiter messed up by allowing you to sit there’.
I refuse to comply, I will sit home before I go to the city. The part that irks me most is many of my team is remote due to some issue or another. Some of the people that are remote in my group don’t do any work and have been offline for a week. Yet they are retained most likely for diversity reasons.
Once again the hard working employees get penalized.

Toxic corporate real estate investments are driving this. Occupancy levels are laughable in most cities now, and WF holds a HUGE chunk of those loans. The tax breaks alone are ultimately a savings for the company that translates as a higher compensation package for Charlie. Ultimately, the top of house benefits financially from our suffering. Whether that means stack ranking us, packing us into cubicle plantations, hitting us with endless DE&I platitudes, or laying off domestic labor to replace us with cheaper (and easily exploited) foreign counterparts, Wells Fargo has become “The Bank Of Doing”.. nothing right for it’s employees.🤷🏻
