Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Ford Layoffs

The news hit while I’m on vacation. My teammate (Agency) found out from his employer that today will be his last day. No idea what to expect when I’m back on Monday. This is the Model E space btw.

Some of you may remember DF candid webcast message/QA last September. Paraphrasing: "we are not done with layoffs, we know there is more, but don't know the timing or how much. Our industry is changing rapidly and must adapt very quickly or we're be out of business".

Like it or not, his message was true, scary, and upsetting. I know few of my coworkers decided to retire early last year because they didn't want to take any chances with their lump sum. There was a lot of "brain drain". That's why some retirees were asked to come back as agency.

I suspect that Ford is not following the GM model by offering buyouts, because of the potential new wave of brain drain. Thus going with a selected layoff. Wishing everyone the best of luck.

If Monday is the day and I'm to be terminated, will I receive a meeting notice on Sunday evening or Monday morning?

Good luck to all. At this point it is out of your hand. Be kind to the manager delivering the message. Most managers are just as upset as you are, they are doing what they have been told to do.

@nan, GTH will be used to announce they're "done". Maybe it'll be pushed to Wednesday or next week. Next week seems unlikely given the holiday though. Don't be surprised that they don't say anything. It's all sunshine and roses until the email and meetings come. JF is a coward.

@zlj lower LLs get no info these days. Maybe in the past they did, but LL6s aren't told a thing... Seems LL5s are in the same situation.

When I was SIRPed in 2019 the only ones that knew what cuts were coming were the LL4s and above. Don’t know if that was consistent across the whole company. The only bad news is none of the LL4s and above were impacted. They all remapped themselves reporting to each other and then took it out on all the LL5s, LL6s, GSR, and agency and supplemental. What I hated is I had no idea what was going to happen to my 80 person team that day as their LL5. I know you are all very anxious. We were too back in 2019. All I can tell you is that everyone that was impacted in my department is so much happier and there is “Life after Ford” and there are much better companies that actually have leadership and not just management in place. There is a difference. Good luck to all of you!

Does anyone know yet what criteria is being used for the “chosen ones”?

Seniority? Performance? Salary? And what leadership level makes the final decisions? Does the LL6 even get a say as to which of their employees go and which stay?

Cuts were expected, many people shared their forecasts based on comments from LL's who were drunk spilling the beans since all of them signed NDA's
Everybody was wrong with timing, but now we know (WSJ) that it will happen soon, some Div's already cut supplementals. Two months ago. list with employees sorted by seniority was given to all LL2 to start choosing who they wanted to go. List had already some names highlighted to go but LL2 had the last word. This comment was made by a former LL5 that retired in Dec but came as supplemental i Jan and was let go on Friday.

I'm a bit surprised management hasn't said anything internally to us. They have to know that little work is going to be done until this is sorted out. Maybe something will be said at GTH on Tuesday ?

I'm an engineer and like to follow the math. WSJ reported last year that Ford is about to cut 8000 jobs in the U.S. I think WSJ was trying to protect its source. They got the number right, but purposely wrote "about to cut" which meant it will happen all at once.

The truth is that Ford cannot just let go all 8000 at once, it would be very disruptive to the operations. So the 8000 number still stands. If you add the layoffs and retirements in 2022, they don't add up to 8000. It is expected that layoffs will happen this year.

Unfortunately we as a company is shrinking. There is so much headwind coming at us that we must change very quickly. (Think about what happened to Kodak).

Headwind includes:

  1. States are passing laws to ban ICE by 2035 (shortsighted in my view)
  2. Cheap EVs from SE Asia will flood the market in about 3 years
  3. EV last longer (with the exception of battery). People will not change them frequently

Notice Toyota and Honda are not shrinking. It makes me unhappy to see Ford in the current situation. I never imagined we would be like this when I started working in PDC many years back. My college roommate when to work for Toyota, he is still there working at their tech center in Ann Arbor. His life is a lot less stressful, I'm not jealous, I'm just sad at our current Ford situation.

I work with IT groups at FORD, especially in the area of new software development. In the last month they said their projects are getting cut and didn't know whether they would have jobs any more. These were longer term projects. Best of luck to my automaker brothers and sisters. It looks like we are headed through a rough patch.

Layoff will happen every 6 months for the next few years. Last year August layoff was supposed to happen in June. There were no layoffs in December because many retired.

Here we are at the end of 2Q23, it will be about 500. There will be another round in 4Q unless we see another wave of retirements (which could happen because the lump sum for 2024 will likely go down again due to higher interest rates). Best wishes to all leaving and staying.

@saj+1nh6veO1 If you predict layoffs regarding Ford for a few months you'll eventually be right. Don't pat yourself on the back too hard.
