Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Very little gets created in house

Short term pain, long term gain. Right now IBM is circling the wagons around a product set that is mostly dwindling in market share. Very little gets created in house due to underfunding of dev, then we overpay to buy companies with new products. If IBM wants to be a growing software company in 10-20 years it needs to invest more in product dev, or just keep watching companies like Snowflake come out of nowhere and eat its lunch.

Bumped from an older post for being on point. OP is @1knt+1lRpgshe.

Ever since Thomas was so tone-deaf in the statements he made during one of his weekly on the same day that a major RA was taking place, I knew that this guy was a buffoon

Rob Thomas is clinically insane. Two new products per quarter every quarter forever. I foresee some disappointment for this buffoon.

I agree that few products are truly homegrown these days, but developing a product using some frameworks and off-the-shelf components is far different than acquiring a company to sell its existing products (which they did not contribute to the development of).

In IBM's defense, there is very little in today's marketplace from any company that is purely homegrown. Like everything else in our society, computer hardware and software has evolved into assemblies of components from many manufacturers. The idea of IBM buying companies for fresh ideas is neither new nor unique...everybody does it.

Some people are frustrated because they are searching for "the next big thing" and not getting it. The System/360...Microsoft Windows...the Macintosh...the iPhone...Google. They only appear occasionally, and if one appeared today it would be viewed with suspicion by the modern audience (who distrusts proprietary products from a single vendor). It's true for computers, cars, energy, healthcare...you name it.

It's a tough nut to crack.

Rob Thomas said to the dev teams that at the very least two new products (or major enhancements) need to see the light every quarter. So, let's see...
