Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Prediction

Within 1 year RTO will fail miserably, and organizations will quietly return to a more flexible work/life experience.

Do you know how many times I’ve been forced back into the office, only for them to completely reverse course a few months later?

At least 4 that I can remember. This will be no different. The RTO policy will provide the desired effect of thinning the herd and they’ll try to boost moral by loosening the restrictions. So predictable.

Whoever replied saying it couldn’t be further than the truth needs glasses and a hearing aid…fast.

T will always have consistent and predictable surplus events every single 90 days…no group will be without impact in these cycles.

“This couldn't be further from the truth! My organization is still hiring, so I don't foresee any layoffs in the near future or even distant future when we're considered to be short-handed as it is! I'm sorry for you folks that are impacted because I've been going through this annual event for many, many years!”

Holy cow .. head in the sand much ?

Must be in the HR department or legal department :-)

We know this, it goes without saying.

Yup. They will realize there is not enough room. Then after an eNPS survey they’ll posture “you spoke we listened, flex coming back. Look how great we are!”

By then the objective will have been met. RTO was implemented to reduce 30k-40k headcount over the next 36 months. Needing less than 100k employees.

It is always possible that a new Covid variant could appear and force a return to WFH. The coast looks clear for now, and I'm not saying that it is probable, but it is possible that Covid, which I hear is checking out other animal species at the moment, could reappear in humans in a virulent way.

The RTO office you experienced previously was not on the scale we are seeing now.

Although these seem random and without logic, to the contrary they are planned with relative precision. Planning occurs 6 months out or less, and by the time you hear about them the decisions about who have largely already been made with a few exceptions. You will always have a job somewhere in T if you really want one, it might be lower paying with less attractive benefits in a location you don’t prefer, but remember, that is part of the employment/unemployment system T has built and will continue until the business is broken up and sold.

Only difference is this time they want to force attrition. T will have staying power until the headcount number is achieved and it could take a year or more. Get your oil changed.

Princeton University found home workers 11-13% more productive than office workers and the displaced cost to run an office was placed on willing home workers, who were glad to skip the commute.

The study also found a 32% turnover rate for un-invested workers in a labor shortage market. Resulting in shedding workers without the stigma of a mass layoff. Also, avoiding the stock market thinking less workers equals less work/customers.

Unfortunately, most won’t still be around to see the reversal!

Old business veterans are regularly replaced with old business veterans - that's the point where the desired 'innovation' a and 'fresh idea' should be begotten.

26 years here and I’ve never seen the company announce an initiative and see it through to the end.

It’s always, make a big announcement, followed by poor execution, which then quietly fades into the next failed initiative.

Rinse and repeat.
