Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Hiring spree 6-10 years ago, sacrificial lambs?

It just dawned on me. Could the hiring spree from 2012 to about 2017 all been a ploy? If you look at Linked In those announcing they've been laid off are mostly 20+ year employees and 10 or less year employees. Almost one for one. Could Ford have hired do many a few years ago to have sacrificial lambs?

We all know that if they could magically just fire all pension eligible employees they would. They have wanted out from under the pension liability for 2-3 decades now. Could all the new faces 6-10 years ago been a plot to then start that process but try to keep it from being apparent?

When I hired in a few years ago it was a huge hiring class. Took up a big conference room in WHQ. About half was FCGs. That sticks with me.

2nd, they aren't fooling anyone. Everyone knows that they are trying to sc--w people out of their pensions. Thus the lawsuits for the last couple of big layoffs.

It all makes sense now .....

No, I don't think the hiring was some nefarious plan. All companies need to have a succession plan. Ford hadn't done much hiring for years and was getting older. They needed to bring in some younger employees. Of course we don't like that people were forced out just short of meeting retirement goals, but many were going to be retiring voluntarily as well, such as last November.

I absolutely behind this was 100% their plan. Think about it. Anyone hired before 2004 is pension eligible. Wait for 8-10 years, hire a bunch of sacrificial lambs, then do a 2 non-pension for every pension eligible layoff. Cover your tracks. After a few rounds, bo-m, lower pension liability!

If you have a pension do not sign the separation agreement. Sue. Everyone that has sued has received more in settlement than of they had signed the BS separation papers.

No, just yet another example of upper management doing a s#itty job of predicting future needs. 2012 to 2017? Do you think those Bozos can think that far ahead??? XD

One of the Ford managers told me after April 2022 layoffs Ford targeted employees that had less than 10 years employment and were 55-60 yrs. Hiring spree 2012-17 and then firing 2018 - - - means they had nefarious plans.

You must be the brains of the operation.

Devil's advocate view: if Ford hadn't hired back then, its existing salaried workforce would have just kept getting older, so it was needed to help get a younger workforce. I know this isn't a popular view, but it's how most companies operate.

That would be a sleazy plan that might help them eliminate their pension obligation. But, I think you might be giving them too much credit. If those hiring sprees were part of their plan that means they came up with a plan more than 11 years ago and stuck with the plan even though there were leadership changes. In my opinion one of Ford’s serious problems is the inability to develop a long term plan and implement it successfully. You’re thinking like a person who defines a goal, develops a strategy and sees it to completion. They don’t seem to think like that.
