Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

When Intel design require 12+ steppings to get it right the company would go bankrupt using TSMC. As has been pointed out many times before the company culture and methodology is fundamentally flawed. Turning things around is not as simple as changing one thing. You only wish it were that easy.

Let’s also not forget the wonderful mobile SOC turds that Intel had to pay vendors to use via contra revenue.

Also using an objectively superior process technology at that time.

Apple and Qualcomm dominated Intel with inferior transistors.

Let’s not forget AMD was first with dual core and Intel came out with Smithfield.

Of course AMD was first with IPC per clock and Intel went for Prescott and Tejas.

AMd went chiplets and Intel of course followed.

Intel does know how to copy, CE!

Are you an engineer at Intel?
If so, that is a frightening fact.

It’s 64-bit X86 genius.
Not the general concept of 64-bit addresses and datapaths.

Since AMD-64 came out first, Intel had to copy it VERBATIM to maintain compatibility or else lose server share to AMD.

@o1yg no JK invented it in the mid/late 80s. Nintendo had 64 bit instructions before mainstream desktop PC.

Let’s also not forget that x86-64 was invented by AMD and copied by Intel.

Intel design is very overrated.
AMD can deliver roughly the same performance in roughly half of the area.

Let’s get serious. Who are we kidding?

Intel design capability is nowhere near as good as the competition. Even with a dominating process lead, Intel messed up with Pentium 4 and Itanium and almost allowed Opteron to win big.

Now that TSMC has blown past Intel, it’s not looking great as AMD has reached critical mass in the server market and will soon turn their investment dollars towards AI and finally client.
All with a superior design as well as TSMC process.

JIm was actually the only person in upper management that I ever saw talk honestly about Intel's problems on the technical side

Jim and Bob wanted to split the company apart.

TMG has no chance and cutting the x86 and design product team would set them loose to innovate unencumbered by the high cost RD, lagging technology and fundamental broken economics of leading edge node at TMG. That is why there is IFS a decade too late. Should have been done during Bills day

Intel could be Nvidia and AMD combined unleashed but saddled with TMG will go bankrupt

What was Jim’s proposal?

May be JK can consider coming back as our nodes would be ready in future and he can take up the final challenge of his career to put Intel over the hump.

I know JK comes here everyday to read this forum. So making a personal appeal to him.
