Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

6 months and still nothing

I was laid off 12/30/22 from the Cary office and as of July 4, I am still unable to find work. I was let go when a teammate who has been begging to be let go stayed. How does that make sense. That’s another fine mess you got us into Hans.

I work at Verizon. If you think a Network Engineer is a glorified circuit tester is just wrong. Network Engineers turn up, repair, and maintain a very large network with little help. Network Engineers are responsible for the quality of the network everyday. If a Network
Engineer is not engaged in making the network each day, that employee is at risk of layoff. I have worked in the industry for almost 40 years and Verizon is the most challenging job of my life.

Network engineer at Verizon is just really a glorified circuit testers. Its a nice title to show off to people. Outside of Verizon you learn real quick what a real Network engineer does. If anybody fits the role where you at, you better be already getting your Cisco certifications now or you will hsve a hard time like this guy

@elr+1nsdvjfd: the OP is white. Otherwise they'd have had a job in a week... skills or no.

“I hope I don’t get laid off. I make great money but have no skill set. I don’t really want to flip burgers for a living.”

My backup plan is seasonal work at hobby lobby which pays well and based on their nearly manual cash registers have really old processes and better pay than wireless retail except no benefits.

My assumption is you’re applying for jobs similar to the one you were let go from? Get out of your comfort zone and try something new.

“What skills do you have”. Well I’m not the OP but I have VZ skills and VZ in my resume for a long time which I’ve been told first hand I’d be better off with nearly anything else. My one chance it to find a government job stuck even further in the past.

This has been happening forever. Lots of ways to hide it by also terminating younger folks. Face it though a lot of people are making a lot more money than what the market would dictate given their skills. We chalk it up to being paid for experience but companies don't like to pay for experience especially in an industry where they are trying to innovate and stop doing things the old way.

I know someone in the same situation from the Cary office. @elr+1nsdvjfd it's not so easy if you consider a lot of those let go last year were let go due to salary and tenure. As such they tend to be middle age and it's not so easy to find work. There is potential age discrimination, you're not that young anymore to take a more manual labor type job, and you're overqualified for other jobs. Sadly some knowledge is only Verizon specific. It takes longer. For @xii+1nsdvjfd & "I unfortunately know folks let to in a rif before the VS who never found work again", I know them too. Best of luck to you. I hope it all turns around for you soon.

What did you do for Verizon? I find it very hard to believe in 6 months, in a booming jom market that you have found nothing? What skills do you have?

Clearly, named the correct individual to fault who is a Sweden embarrassment. Should have never been allowed entry in to this country. Best of luck!!!

Unfortunately, there are 2 to 3 variables, factoring to which employee gets targeted.

The rationale, criteria, is very counter-intuitive. However, at the Director level or ED level or higher, there should be an override. And at least to do a swap if there is another employee candidate.
