Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Is the plan really to axe the entire North America engineering department at Ford?

As in, to cut everyones jobs and move it to other countries?

Seems like a recipe for disaster.

If he's not a member of a DEI group, he will NOT be allowed to be compensated based on his abilities and productivity. Merritt-based compensation would be interpreted as racist, s-xist, and homophobic.

@kien
If he's smart enough to get through all the math and science classes, he's smart enough to do something else that doesn't have the unlimited on-shored international competition dragging compensation down. He can make a LOT more money and have a much better career doing something that doesn't have that downward pressure.

Hello everyone, before the group puts the final nail in the US engineering career coffin remember most engineers do not work for an auto company. They work for suppliers, tier 1 through tier 3 and even more work outside the auto industry. Engineers are needed in the US and their wages are in the top tier for compensation. If you are a good engineer, who is not a "specialist", it does not matter if the company makes potato chips, computer or lawn mowers. The fundamentals of manufacturing apply, and you can be successful. My son is going to college to be a mechanical engineer and I know he will have multiple job offers. And yes, I told him NOT to work for Ford or any OEM.

“Engineers are a commodity and when they do not need you any more - you will be kicked to the curb“.
As an engineer, all I have to make a living with are ideas and knowledge, however,
Ford lays claim to all my ideas and all my knowledge. If I am terminated and continue to try to make a living from those things, they say they own whatever comes from them into perpetuity.

Ford wants me to go away quietly and shuffle off into poverty…. an empty shell.

In the meantime I am paid a pittance to pretend to work. What is there to feel depressed or unmotivated about??

It is Capitalism at its best at Ford. Do not blame the player or the game, learn to play it. Nike, Adidas, Apple, Boeing, GE, Combustion Engineering, John Deere, GM, TESLA. and many other "American" companies, have huge operations overseas where they pay pennies for qualified technical labor. This is not a Democrat or Republican issues, it a Wall Street issue, if you want your investments to grow then companies need to lay off people or move operations to Katmandu. America is just a market where products / services are sold at a profit, I blame Reaganomics for all this mess, he began protecting big businesses and slashed unions, as long as the rich are protected by Washington, they will never pay their fair share of taxes. The Bible says be careful of those who speak on my behalf since they are those who will destroy you.

Ford closed the South American manufacturing facilities, freeing up plant engineers in Brazil to take North American PD program work last year as Ford cut in April 2022, august 2022 and retirements in November of 2022. Late 2022 saw the engineering center open in Mexico. Plenty of Ford manuf engineers ready to do PD work on NA and global programs. All the while, since 10 yrs ago, GES and GME in India have received significant investments and increased in staffing. Before that , in 2008-2010, Ford used engineering in Turkey as LCC.
If you don’t know it by now, it’s your fault.

@1dbd,

Not to mention the Full-Service suppliers.

After reading the article below it is basically a one stop shopping facility with everything under one roof. Ford has long ago planned this out and unfortunately the writing is on the wall.

Why would any young American pursue a career in a STEM field if they know that their wages will be set by foreign countries that manipulate their markets and currencies?
They wouldn’t. They don’t. That’s why young people are avoiding the hard math and science classes. There’s no money or security in it. And the politicians don’t care.

Why do we have to compete with low-cost countries that manipulate their currencies and/or prevent their people from being paid fair-market wages?
That’s where the problem is. We shouldn’t be letting this stuff in to corrupt OUR markets.
Politicians don’t want to address the problem.

We need to lower the salaries of these positions if we want to compete with low cost countries.

You don't have to like it, but this is how capitalism works.

I have been buying up real estate and raising the rent to make huge profits. If I were leading Ford, I would lower the salaries significantly and stop providing health insurance. Health insurance is not a 'right' and should be the responsibility of the individual anyway.

The article describing the GTBC makes me sick. As a US citizen, my family's livelihood is being ruined by wealthy elitists- BF and CF. With 25+ years at the company, it sickens me to think of the sacrifices I have made over the years to get Ford through tough times - no merit raises, no 401k match, no bonus, no OT pay. My reward- my job going outside the US, not because I couldn't perform, but because I was too expensive. BF and the Ford family are shameful. All US employees should immediately quietly quit. Use the time to get your affairs in order. Take a page from the Ford family playbook and put yourself first for once.

It'll probably happen. FoMoCo exec leadership are ardent conservatives who believe that this type of decimation of the middle class is simply 'capitalism'. Good luck to those of you who weren't born into wealthy families.

Ford is already a disaster. The execs don't understand how to run a company successfully. It's to hard for them. So they cut corners and come up with ways to spin their failures as wins.

There will be a skeleton crew in NA within 1-2 years. Another round of retirements is coming this fall as well.

Yes, pretty much.

I'm just waiting for a new Ford corporate jet(s) to have regular flights back and forth to Mexico and Brazil for when the engineers have to support issues at pilot plant and MPG.

Unless you are in upper management, there adding jobs.
Your management does not appreciate you, engineers are a commodity and when they do not need you any more - you will be kicked to the curb.

Ford has more executives on the payrolls than any other car company. Want to increase EBITA, just get rid of some of these $20M plus almost-double-salary-bonuses.

We have 2x+ more executive management than Chrysler (stellantis) does and they kinda forget to mention this in the townhall meetings, when thehy tell you how fat you are. I mention this as this has become the benchmark for engineering. Our non-producing executives are the highest paid in the industry without the EBITA/Profitability to substantiate their salary.

There is no reason to believe otherwise.
People vote with their dollars, and so far, the overwhelming winner has been companies that have their design, manufacturing and supply chain overseas.
Remember that when you vot with YOUR dollars.
