Why Your Employees are Quitting

I’d say that we are past the 50% mark.

The real reason people quit their jobs is because the managers charged with ensuring their employees' success don't care enough to meet their needs as valued employees and human beings.

And this is consistent with leading research by Gallup. In one study of 7,272 U.S. adults, Gallup found that 50 percent of employees left their job "to get away from their manager to improve their overall life at some point in their career."

Gallup CEO Jim Clifton summarized this unfortunate phenomenon in a succinct sentence when he said this in the State of the American Workplace report:

"The single biggest decision you make in your job--bigger than all the rest--is who you name manager.

When you name the wrong person manager, nothing fixes that bad decision. Not compensation, not benefits--nothing."

XOM decided to solve its white male distribution (North American and European White Males) by major hiring in Guyana, India, Africa and Singapore, while closing down hi paid white male locations in New Jersey and UK and reducing headcounts in Houston by transferring work to South America and india. White males are older and retiring rapidly also. Next White Females in US, UK, EU and Canada will be replaced by Indians and South Americans and Africans with their jobs moved out of North America and Europe.

What employees are quitting? I’m seeing all the DEI employees staying, only the competent employees are quitting. Maybe it’s because competent employees are tired of doing the work the DEI ones are supposed to be doing and then the DEI employees getting promotions while the competent employees are getting PIP’d. What is Exxon going to do when all they have left are the DEI hires who can’t do the job and have no one to do it for them?

Exxon engineers should be represented in the same proportion as engineering schools. Anything outside that is obvious discrimination. What percentage of engineering schools are Asian? What percentage of Exxon engineers are Asian? Clearly discrimination, just like Harvard and UNC. How did the Supreme Court rule on that?

To the poster who says who joined right out of school and knows what works, this is another huge problem for the organisation on shifting culture.
Un-educated folks who have only ever known the Company.
They are making decisions based on their very limited world view and experience.

@2oxi EM is over 70% white and majority male.

Whites are actually over-represented relative to their distribution in the general population, though there is variation within and between different business units.

I’m sorry, but I just don’t follow the line of reasoning that white men are somehow an oppressed minority in a company where they have a monopoly on the decision making power.

EM managers have very little power to meet their employees needs because they are handcuffed by HR. Very rarely you see managers go out of their way to fight for his team. Most of them don’t have the ba--s to go against HR because it will jeopardize their career/paycheck. Yes managers su-k here but ultimately I blame HR.

I’ve had great managers and not so great managers but within the last 5 years the likelihood of getting one that is unbearable is much higher. Changes in ranking system allows the narcissistic 2-4 year manager enough time to wreck your career no matter how hard you work or how good you are. Each year is like playing Russian roulette. I respectfully agree to disagree with the wait it out they will leave guidance.

Sorry but I do not agree. These studies do not apply to Exxon usually. We have different culture. One of the first thing I learned when I joined was that I will have bad managers or managers that I will not get along with them. I was also told that there is nothing I can do if I get an incompetent manager. Just wait because he/she will move on in 2 years. This is something that everybody knew. The experienced colleagues were always saying such things. They were right, I had many managers like that, who in a couple of years were gone. We stayed because the compensation and other factors made it worth it despite the many bad managers. In my mind, what has changed is that compensation, benefits, long term career prospects have diminished relative to the job market that now the quirk of bad managers is no longer tolerated.

@OP They really don’t care if you quit, and nobody is in a rush to hire you.

To hear the people who post here tell it, you’d think that they were single-handedly driving global economic growth. Of course there’s no shortage of nefarious conspiracies robbing of them of their god-given professional excellence.

The truth is less interesting: most of you are coasting in a large organization that does a good job of hiding incompetence, and doesn’t really ask much of you anyway. So, no loss if you move on. You can check-out and do nothing elsewhere.

Phrases like: We are not agree with the Paris Agreement, At EM is not just a job, it is a career, Your are a great asset for the company, We earn billions of dollars and we are to give use laptops to the community school to appear on TV or newspapers. Etc, etc, etc.
