As was just said below, an "unrealized loss" means you didn't lose any money, only that the current value is below what you paid for it.

Since every major bank passed the latest stress tests, that means they have sufficient reserves that they would not need to sell everything at a loss and collapse the way we saw several mismanaged small and midsize banks collapse in the past year.

Anyone who thinks an unrealized loss on bonds is a problem for a big bank just doesn't understand how money and investing work.

I have never invested in stock of any kind and while equity holders continued their up and down cycles over the last 30 years my bond portfolio just marched along always upwards. bonds DO NOT lose value when interest rates go up UNLESS you sell them during that period. Buy and hold constantly adding new higher interest bonds in a step ladder portfolio is a solid investment. If the banks don't sell the bonds they aren't losses just like owning underwater stock.

What a stupid a-s comparison. JPM and C are not run out of NC. Also, why stop with the sillu tech comparison. WMT has huge headcount compared to tech firms.

Most banks are out of NC, have you seen anything wonderful ever created there? That's not a joke, that's a serious question. They have tech firms with 1/1000 the headcount with market caps valued more than JPM, BofA, WF, C, combined x 5, and yes the mic dropped. The fact these places and more likely smaller banks can't manage their assets and liability matching is no shock, the places are run by id--ts.
