Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Job with competitors

Anyone else thinking of trying to get an offer from direct competitors? After many years here that would be very difficult for me, but on the other hand, I would love to try something new.

@2npy+1nuF9w6w is spot on with I've heard and seen as well.
I've been hearing, from recruiters, that Ford, GM and these other big legacy companies are so siloed in their weird company specific role that employees can have a hard time finding a good fit after they leave. Ford has ford specific roles with random titles. Many of the product managers here are not what a product manager is outside of Ford.
I personally know recruiters in metro detroit who won't interview people from ford or gm for this reason.

When I was first terminated I really believed all the skills I had learned for 30+ years at Ford would easily transfer to any competitor / supplier in the auto industry. Boy was I wrong. The truth is those companies said they weren't interested in those skills because they were Ford exclusive and not industry-wide. So my suggestion is focus on other skills you have more so than Ford-isms you did. I also found the idea of looking for work outside the auto field challenging. However, when I embraced the idea, I successfully found employment in the education system not auto field and have no regrets.

Last August coworkers went to Stelantis within a week of being cut. Both were Technical experts and didn’t get their full pension from Ford. 24 and 25 years with Ford. Ford is a clown show now.
