Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Bad idea to try to move laterally?

I want to laterally move roles to something I am more passionate about but I am unsure if right now is a good idea to even bring this up.

I don't want to get fired or have a target on my back because upper management gets upset I want to move to a different vertical ( job family) within the company.

My position evolved into something I was miserable doing. My manager was aware I had interviewed in another department. I was one of the people cut. Just look outside the company! Control your destiny.

Don't do it. Moving during this volatile time will enable mgmt to use you as a buffer (those are the ones first to be cut during layoffs). This happened to me. Mgmt knows months in advance what their head count task numbers are and scramble to determine who to keep / who to cut. So when I found the "new" job in the new dept I was thrilled. But in hindsight it was simply a job to keep me busy until the layoffs began. When the 2019 layoffs started, mgmt kept his dept in tact by eliminating all the tasks I did and then terminating me. He could then honestly say he complied with head count reduction numbers, and was able to carry on business as usual without restructuring. So my suggestion is stay put.

I'd find out if management will let you leave. Most areas have hiring freezes and won't let you go for a lateral move.

The sticky part is that the management may already not like you and if you DON’T move you’re going to get fired.

A few years ago. Ford wanted engineers to leave ICE for BEV. Many signed up but then just before the move Management blocked them because they had too many wanting to switch. Ask for the move it won’t hurt
