Just got my reasonable accommodation for my bad back. I will not have to drive 1 1/2 hours to the office. Sedwick tried to give push back but my Doctor responded with paperwork and they gave in. Northern California Employee, time to floor Sedwick

ADA Job Accommodations only cover "work" situations; this does not include how you get to work, your commute time, transportation method, etc. I worked many cases in HR where this was cited, and every case was denied as not qualifying under the ADA. You can validate this by doing your own research on the government's ADA web page.
To be clear, a reasonable accommodation does not necessarily have to be granted as requested, regardless of medical documentation.
Accommodations are indeed federally protected under the ADA. However, even If the medical documentation substantiates the request, it still goes back to the business unit to determine if granting the accommodation equates to an undue burden on the business.
I expect the business units to start pushing back by clearly defining the positions as in-office. This is what happened when the bargained for folks attempted to extend WFH through accommodation requests.... 95% of those were refused on the basis of them being in-office jobs. Folks with medical conditions that stated driving into the office was difficult were also refused, and if I recall, those were even easier to block. I don't believe a business has to accommodate for an employee's ability to get to work... only to perform the job once at work.
Make sure you continue to work on a backup plan for your pending surplus.
